The National Security Council (NSC) has given approval for the planned civilian-led Christmas Convoy to the West Philippine Sea, with certain security measures in place. In a statement released on Tuesday, the NSC clarified that the participating vessels would not proceed to the BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin (Second Thomas) Shoal due to safety concerns.

The agreement was reached following a meeting between the NSC and the leaders of the Atin Ito! Coalition. After a constructive dialogue, both parties agreed that a convoy to the BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal would not be advisable at this time, prioritizing the safety of the civilian convoy.

Instead, the convoy will pass through the general vicinity of the Ayungin Shoal on its way to other Philippine-occupied features, bringing Christmas cheer to the troops stationed in those areas. The NSC spokesperson and Assistant Director General, Jonathan Malaya, emphasized the convoy’s visit to Pag-asa Island, where gifts and donated supplies for BRP Sierra Madre will be turned over to the Philippine Navy-AFP and the Philippine Coast Guard for delivery during regular rotation and resupply missions.

Malaya further explained that by visiting other Philippine-occupied features, the Christmas Convoy will cover a vast area of the West Philippine Sea, allowing them to bring Christmas cheer directly to more fisherfolk and front-liners. The agreement also ensures the safety and security of the convoy.

Expressing gratitude to the Atin Ito! Coalition for their cooperation, Malaya acknowledged their efforts in finding common ground with the government to assert and defend the country’s sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction in pursuit of the national interest.

The initial plan for the December 5 mission included over 40 vessels, with the convoy consisting of fisherfolk, civil society, artists, religious and church groups, youth groups, and invited media organizations. To ensure the safety of the civilian convoy, Philippine Coast Guard vessels will escort them throughout their journey in the West Philippine Sea.

Last week, the NSC stated that it did not support the planned civilian resupply mission to Ayungin Shoal. However, with the agreement reached between the NSC and the Atin Ito! Coalition, the Christmas Convoy will proceed to other Philippine-occupied features, spreading Christmas joy to the troops stationed there.

The NSC’s decision to approve the civilian-led Christmas Convoy demonstrates the government’s commitment to upholding national security while also recognizing the importance of bringing goodwill and support to the brave men and women serving in the West Philippine Sea. By adhering to the agreed-upon security measures, the convoy ensures the safety of all participants and contributes to the overall stability of the region.

As the convoy embarks on its journey, it serves as a reminder of the unity and resilience of the Filipino people, especially during the holiday season. It symbolizes the nation’s unwavering dedication to protecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity, while also fostering goodwill and camaraderie among its citizens.

The Christmas Convoy not only brings joy and support to the troops stationed in the West Philippine Sea but also highlights the importance of international cooperation and understanding. By contextualizing potentially unclear parts to an international audience, this initiative showcases the Philippines’ commitment to peace and stability in the region.

As the Christmas Convoy sails through the West Philippine Sea, it carries with it the hopes and well-wishes of the Filipino people, spreading the spirit of Christmas and unity in a challenging and significant maritime setting.
