President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has taken a significant step in promoting cycling as a mode of transportation in the Philippines by declaring the last working day of November as the “National Bike-to-Work Day.” This proclamation, signed on November 28, aims to raise public awareness on the viability of cycling and further improve cycling infrastructure in the country.
The President emphasized the importance of adopting measures that enable safe, independent, and physically-distanced travel, especially for essential workers, in the post-pandemic “new normal.” By encouraging the use of bicycles, the country can better prepare itself for any future health emergencies.
In addition to promoting cycling as a mode of transport, the proclamation also seeks to promote a balanced and healthful ecology that aligns with the rhythm and harmony of nature. It underscores the need to strike a balance between development and environmental protection, while ensuring a quality of air that protects human health and welfare.
The Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028 recognizes the significance of developing an active transport network and giving the highest priority to pedestrians and cyclists in the hierarchy of road users. This aligns with the goals of the “National Bike-to-Work Day” and highlights the government’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally-friendly transportation options.
To lead, coordinate, and supervise the observance of the “National Bike-to-Work Day,” President Marcos has designated the Inter-Agency Technical Working Group on Active Transport (IATWG-AT) of the Department of Health (DOH). This group will play a crucial role in organizing programs, projects, and activities for the annual celebration.
President Marcos also calls upon both the public and private sectors to support the yearly “National Bike-to-Work Day.” Their participation and cooperation will be instrumental in creating a culture that embraces cycling as a mainstream mode of transportation.
By declaring the “National Bike-to-Work Day,” President Marcos Jr. has taken a commendable step towards promoting cycling and sustainable transportation in the Philippines. This initiative not only addresses the immediate need for safe and socially-distanced travel but also contributes to the long-term goal of creating a greener and healthier environment for all.
