Construction has officially commenced on two new missile corvettes that the Philippine Navy ordered from South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries in 2021. The steel cutting and keel laying ceremonies for the boats took place at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) Shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea, with the presence of Philippine Navy officials, including Navy Chief Vice Admiral Toribio Adani Jr. and other high-ranking officials.
The start of the production process for the corvettes was marked by these ceremonies, according to Navy Public Affairs director Capt. Benjo Negranza. He expressed confidence that the acquisition of these ships will significantly enhance the naval defense capabilities of the Philippine Navy, aligning with its objective of becoming a modern and multi-capable force.
With an estimated cost of P28 billion, the two corvettes are designed to fulfill various missions, including anti-ship, anti-submarine, and anti-air operations. They are expected to work in conjunction with the Navy’s existing missile frigates, the Jose Rizal and the Antonio Luna. These vessels will form a robust Surface Action Group, capable of operating independently or in collaboration with other modern warships.
The Philippine Navy has been actively collaborating with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and civilian boats in resupply missions to Ayungin Shoal, where soldiers are stationed on the grounded BRP Sierra Madre. The addition of the new corvettes will further enhance the Navy’s ability to support such operations and strengthen its presence in the region.
In recent times, the Philippine Navy has also engaged in joint patrols with the United States and Australia in the West Philippine Sea. These patrols have been conducted in response to incursions by Chinese ships in the area. By participating in these joint operations, the Philippine Navy demonstrates its commitment to safeguarding its territorial waters and upholding international maritime laws.
The contract for the construction of the corvettes was awarded to Hyundai Heavy Industries on December 28, 2021. The shipbuilder has a proven track record in delivering high-quality naval vessels, making them a trusted partner for the Philippine Navy’s modernization efforts.
As the construction of these new missile corvettes progresses, the Philippine Navy eagerly anticipates their integration into its fleet. These vessels will play a crucial role in enhancing the country’s maritime security and defense capabilities, ensuring the Navy’s readiness to protect national interests and contribute to regional stability.
With the ongoing modernization initiatives and strategic partnerships, the Philippine Navy continues to evolve into a formidable force equipped to address the evolving challenges in the maritime domain. The acquisition of these new corvettes represents a significant milestone in this journey towards a more capable and resilient navy.
