On Sunday morning, December 3, 2023, tragedy struck Mindanao State University (MSU) in Marawi City as an explosion inside its Dimaporo Gymnasium claimed the lives of three students and left 10 others wounded. The Philippine National Police (PNP) has confirmed the bombing and is currently awaiting further reports and the results of an ongoing investigation.

PCol. Jean Fajardo, PNP spokesman, provided an initial report from the Regional Director of the Provincial Regional Office Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO BAR), stating, “Three individuals have been confirmed dead, and nine others are wounded as a result of the explosion this morning at the MSU Gymnasium in Marawi City. We are still waiting for the official report.”

The military is currently investigating the possibility of revenge as a motive for the bombing. This theory stems from an encounter in Maguindanao del Sur the previous day, in which 11 members of the terrorist group Daulah Islamiya, including their leader, were killed. It is believed that the group may have orchestrated the explosion at MSU in retaliation.

According to reports received by authorities, the victims were attending Sunday mass in the university gymnasium when an unknown device detonated, causing the tragic incident. At this time, the names of the deceased and injured have been withheld, as campus officials and law enforcers have yet to issue official statements regarding the bombing.

Initial reports of the bombing were gathered from videos posted on Facebook, as reported by The Manila Times. The police are currently working to determine the type of explosive used in the attack, as well as establish the identities of the suspects and the motive behind the bombing.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of the victims during this difficult time. It is truly disheartening to see such violence occur within a place of learning and growth. We hope that the authorities swiftly bring those responsible to justice and take the necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of all students and faculty at Mindanao State University.

As the investigation progresses, we will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as they become available. It is essential that the international community stands united against acts of violence and terrorism, working together to create a safer world for everyone.
