(UPDATE) Police in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) have identified two persons of interest in the bombing attack at Mindanao State University (MSU) in Marawi City on Sunday, which claimed the lives of at least four people. The BARMM police chief, BGen. Allan Nobleza, revealed in a radio interview that they have identified individuals who are being investigated in connection with the incident. However, Nobleza did not disclose their names, citing the ongoing investigation.
The extremist group Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the bombing, stating in a statement released on Sunday that its fighters “detonated an explosive device on a large gathering of Christian disbelievers in Marawi City.” The explosion occurred at the university’s gymnasium, where a mass was taking place.
Following the attack, the BARMM police have heightened security measures in the region. Police checkpoints have been intensified, and there is an increased police presence to ensure public safety. BGen. Nobleza emphasized that the police force is on red alert and committed to preventing similar incidents from happening again.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff, Romeo Brawner, expressed determination in apprehending the perpetrators swiftly. He stated, “We will go after the perpetrators as soon as possible and utilize all available resources to ensure justice is served.” General Brawner emphasized the need for close coordination between the AFP and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to address the issue effectively and prevent future attacks.
During a command conference held at the Army’s 103rd Infantry Brigade headquarters in Marawi, General Brawner met with senior officers from General Headquarters and top officers of the Western Mindanao Command to discuss enhancing security measures. He also engaged in talks with the Bangsamoro Chief Minister Ahod Ebrahim and regional police officials to strengthen collaboration in maintaining peace and security.
As of now, seven out of the 54 injured blast victims remain hospitalized, with the rest having been discharged. The AFP spokesman, Col. Xerxes Trinidad, provided updates on the victims’ conditions, highlighting the progress made in their recovery.
Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr. sought to reassure the public, particularly during the Christmas season, by emphasizing the military and police’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Metro Manila. He stated, “We should not be worried because it is our responsibility to protect your safety.” Security measures in Metro Manila have been reinforced, with both the military and police on red alert.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has formed a special investigating team, led by BGen. Nobleza, to probe the bombing incident. The team will work diligently to uncover the truth and bring those responsible to justice.
The international community has expressed condemnation and solidarity with the Philippines in the wake of the MSU bombing.
