POLITICAL party leaders have come together to express their unwavering support for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s initiative for peace and national unity. This significant development marks a crucial moment in the Philippines’ journey towards lasting peace and sustainable development. In a joint statement released on Tuesday, these leaders, representing all political parties in the House of Representatives, emphasized their commitment to the greater good of the country.

The leaders acknowledged the diverse perspectives and ideologies within their ranks, yet they stood united in their belief that Marcos’ call for peace transcends political boundaries. They recognized that this call speaks to the core of the shared values of the Filipino people. It is a call for understanding, cooperation, and collective action towards a future where every citizen can live in harmony and prosperity.

Understanding the complexities and challenges of the peace process, the leaders pledged their support and commitment to contribute constructively to the negotiations. They firmly believe that through dialogue, empathy, and mutual respect, historical divides can be overcome, leading to a more inclusive and peaceful nation.

In urging Filipinos to join them in their pursuit, the leaders emphasized that it is only through joint efforts that the aspirations of peace, unity, and progress can become a reality. They called for the active participation and engagement of all citizens in achieving these goals.

The House Secretary-General, Reginald Velasco, identified the party leaders who supported the President’s peace initiative. These leaders include Senior Deputy Speaker and Pampanga 3rd District Representative Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales Jr., House Majority Leader and Zamboanga City 2nd District Representative Manuel Jose “Mannix” Dalipe, and Agusan del Norte 1st District Representative Jose “Joboy” Aquino 2nd of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats. Additionally, Rizal 1st District Representative Michael John Duavit, Ilocos Sur 2nd District Representative Kristine Singson-Meehan, and Quezon 1st District Representative Wilfrido Mark Enverga of the Nationalist People’s Coalition showed their support. Deputy Speaker Las Piñas City Representative Camille Villar, Surigao del Norte 2nd District Representative Robert Ace Barbers, and Romblon Representative Eleandro Jesus “Budoy” Madrona of the Nacionalista Party also expressed their backing. Furthermore, Camarines Sur 2nd District Representative Luis Raymund “LRay” Villafuerte Jr., Antipolo City 1st District Representative Roberto Puno, and Bataan 2nd District Representative Albert Garcia of the National Unity Party joined in supporting the peace initiative. Ako Bicol Partylist Representative Elizaldy Co, Bicol Saro Partylist Representative Brian Raymund Yamsuan, and Barangay Health and Wellness Partylist Representative Angelica Natasha Co of the Partylist Coalition Foundation Inc. also pledged their support. Lastly, Navotas Representative Tobias “Toby” Tiangco of the Partido Navoteño and a representative of other political parties in the House showed their solidarity.

In response to the renewed peace talks with the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), Vice President Sara Duterte expressed her concerns. She referred to the decision as a “deal with the devil” in a statement released on the 5th anniversary of the founding of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict.

Vice President Duterte emphasized that her experience has shown that the communists are not serious and lack sincerity when it comes to talking peace. She expressed her concern that the peace negotiations could be used by the communists to betray the government and deceive the public.

Despite this differing opinion, the collective support of the political party leaders demonstrates their commitment to pursuing peace and unity in the Philippines. They believe that by engaging in constructive dialogue and fostering understanding, the nation can overcome historical divisions and build a brighter future for all Filipinos.

Together, as a united House of Representatives and as one nation, they look forward to a future marked by peace, unity, and prosperity.
