The Quezon City government has raised its early warning system to “red alert” in response to a significant increase in Covid-19 cases over the past week, according to Mayor Maria Josefina “Joy” Belmonte. This decision comes as reports from Dr. Rolando Cruz, chief of the Quezon City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (QCESU), reveal that the daily average cases from December 4-7 have risen to 27, which is 57.9% higher compared to the previous week’s average.
Furthermore, the average positivity rate based on tests conducted is at 14.55%, Mayor Belmonte informed The Manila Times. Additionally, the QCESU report indicates an average daily attack rate per 100,000 people of 0.85 and a reproduction number of 1.
The surge in Covid-19 cases can be attributed to social gatherings and parties during the Christmas season, as well as relaxed restrictions such as the wearing of masks, as stated by Dr. Cruz. He emphasizes, “We have seen in the past years during the height of the pandemic that holiday seasons really attract more cases. Since the chilly weather can also affect the immunity of our people, we would like to remind our ‘QCitizens’ to remain vigilant, especially for Covid-like symptoms such as cough, colds, and fever.”
Mayor Belmonte urges residents to take precautionary measures, including wearing masks in public places and staying indoors when experiencing symptoms. She emphasizes the importance of continuing these basic precautionary measures for the safety of the community, especially now that cases are rising.
In June 2022, QCESU implemented an early warning system to monitor cases, analyze trends, and recommend necessary measures to prevent outbreaks. Based on the parameters of this system and the current Covid-19 data, the red status alert has been raised due to the growth rate surpassing 50% and the average positivity rate exceeding five.
As of December 7, there were 186 active Covid-19 cases recorded in the city, according to the local government.
In light of these developments, it is crucial for the community to understand the importance of adhering to safety protocols and guidelines. By wearing masks, practicing social distancing, and staying informed about the latest updates from health authorities, individuals can contribute to the collective effort in controlling the spread of the virus.
It is important to note that these measures are not only applicable to Quezon City but should also be followed globally. Each country and locality may have its own set of laws and customs regarding Covid-19 prevention. Therefore, it is essential for individuals to stay informed about the specific guidelines and regulations in their respective areas.
The rise in Covid-19 cases serves as a reminder that the fight against the virus is far from over. By remaining vigilant and taking necessary precautions, we can protect ourselves and our communities from the ongoing threat of Covid-19.
