Transport groups, led by the Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (Piston), have announced their plans to hold another nationwide strike this week. The strike is in protest of the government’s December 31 deadline for franchise consolidation, which has raised concerns among drivers and operators.
In a press briefing held on Monday, Piston revealed that the strike will take place from December 14-15. Transport organizations from Central Luzon and Southern Tagalog have also expressed their intention to join the strike, showing solidarity in their opposition to the deadline.
The primary issue raised by Piston is the mandatory franchise consolidation, which they believe will result in the phaseout of traditional jeepneys. This, in turn, would have a direct impact on the livelihoods of drivers and operators. According to the Department of Transportation (DoTr) Order 2017-011, drivers and operators of traditional jeepneys and UV Express units are required to reorganize themselves into cooperatives or corporations before the December 31 deadline. Failure to do so would result in the cessation of operations under the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).
While the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has made some concessions to the transport workers’ demands, such as ensuring that traditional jeepneys will not be phased out after the consolidation deadline, both the LTFRB and the DoTr have remained firm in their stance that the December 31 deadline is non-negotiable.
The previous transport strike, which took place on November 20-22, had significant consequences, including the cancellation of face-to-face classes in several schools in Metro Manila. This highlights the impact of these strikes on daily life and the need for a resolution that addresses the concerns of all parties involved.
