(UPDATE) The Philippines has shown its support for the United Nations resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, aiming to put an end to the loss of life and suffering in the Palestinian enclave, which is currently under heavy bombardment by Israel.

During the 10th emergency special session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Philippine Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Antonio Lagdameo explained the country’s position. Lagdameo expressed deep concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza and emphasized the crucial need for a humanitarian ceasefire in the region.

“This ceasefire is a necessary step to facilitate the delivery of urgent humanitarian aid to all affected civilians, irrespective of their affiliation,” Lagdameo stated on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila).

While the Philippines condemns the October attacks by Hamas militants on Israel, the country also emphasizes the importance of adhering to International Humanitarian Law, particularly the principles of proportionality and distinction in response to security threats.

Lagdameo stressed the imperative consideration of the impact on civilians in any military action, striving to minimize or eliminate collateral damage. The Philippines called on all parties involved to comply with their obligations under international law, especially regarding the protection of civilians, particularly women and children.

“Upholding these laws is essential in ensuring the safety and dignity of all individuals affected by this conflict,” Lagdameo emphasized.

Furthermore, the Philippines seeks to contribute to a solution that respects the rights and needs of both Palestinian and Israeli civilians. The country advocates for a peaceful resolution that upholds international law and leads to lasting peace and security in the region.

The Philippines expressed gratitude to Israel for agreeing to the conditions that facilitated the release of more hostages, including Noralin Babadilla, as announced by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

Last November 29, the DFA welcomed the release from captivity in Gaza of Babadilla, the remaining Filipino hostage of the Hamas militants. Earlier, on November 24, the Hamas fighters released another Filipino hostage, Gelienor Pacheco.

Angelyn Aguirre, Loreta Alacre, Grace Cabrera, and Paul Vincent Castelvi, four Filipinos, lost their lives during the October 7 Hamas attack.

In conclusion, the Philippines stands firmly in support of the UN resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The country recognizes the urgent need to address the humanitarian crisis and deliver essential aid to all affected civilians. While condemning the attacks by Hamas militants, the Philippines emphasizes the importance of adhering to international law and protecting the safety and dignity of all individuals affected by the conflict. The country also expresses its commitment to contributing to a peaceful resolution that respects the rights and needs of both Palestinian and Israeli civilians.
