MANILA, Philippines: A top defense official from the United States, along with security experts from Japan and the Philippines, has called on China to halt its “reckless and dangerous maneuvers” in the West Philippine Sea (WPS). One such maneuver resulted in a collision with Philippine ships during a resupply mission at the Ayungin Shoal.
In a statement released by the White House, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, his Japanese counterpart Akiba Takeo, and Philippine counterpart Eduardo Ano expressed concerns about China’s recent unlawful conduct near Second Thomas Shoal and Scarborough Reef. They emphasized the importance of China abiding by the legally binding July 2016 Arbitral Tribunal ruling and refraining from further provocative behaviors.
Sullivan also reaffirmed the United States’ unwavering commitments to both Japan and the Philippines.
The three security advisers underscored the significance of strengthening trilateral cooperation and committed to implementing the initiatives discussed during their meeting in June of this year.
These initiatives include enhancing defense and security capabilities, particularly in the realm of cybersecurity; upholding a free and open maritime order; fostering cooperation on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief; and promoting a free and equitable economic order.
Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder also shared excerpts from phone conversations between US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin 3rd and Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. regarding the sea dispute.
Despite China’s recent militaristic actions, Austin reiterated the United States’ support for the Philippines in defending its sovereign rights in accordance with international law.
Austin also emphasized the Mutual Defense Treaty between the Philippines and the United States, which extends to the armed forces, public vessels, and aircraft support of both countries, including their respective Coast Guards, anywhere in the Pacific, including the South China Sea.
Furthermore, Austin commended the professionalism demonstrated by the Armed Forces of the Philippines in the face of China’s unlawful behavior.
Austin also highlighted the Philippines’ recent bilateral maritime activities in the South China Sea with the United States and Australia.
In addition to discussing the sea dispute, Austin expressed condolences for the terrorist attack that occurred at Mindanao State University on December 3, resulting in the deaths of at least four people and injuring over 50 others.
He also expressed sympathy for the victims of the December 2 earthquake in Mindanao, which claimed the lives of three people and caused infrastructure damage.
It is crucial for China to heed the calls from the United States, Japan, and the Philippines to cease its provocative actions in the West Philippine Sea. By abiding by international law and respecting the rights of other nations, China can contribute to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
