An infectious disease expert has issued a warning to the public, emphasizing the importance of remaining vigilant, particularly during the holiday season. Dr. Rontgene Solante, President of the Philippine College of Physicians (PCP), cautions that Covid-19 “is still much around,” and highlights the emergence of a new subvariant known as JN.1, which has already been detected in neighboring countries.

According to Dr. Solante, JN.1 is believed to exhibit milder symptoms compared to the Delta variant. However, it still has the potential to trigger more severe cases of Covid-19, especially among vulnerable populations such as the elderly and children.

“When these sectors are infected, the disease can worsen, and there is a significant risk of hospitalization,” warns Dr. Solante. He stresses the need for a continued mindset that acknowledges the ongoing presence of Covid-19 and the necessity of remaining vigilant, particularly in light of the emergence of JN.1.

While the Philippine Genome Center has yet to confirm the presence of the new subvariant in the country, Dr. Solante urges caution and advises against complacency. He explains that JN.1 poses a higher risk of infection due to its resistance to the vaccines and boosters currently available.

Dr. Solante reveals that JN.1 has already been identified in countries such as Japan, China, and Singapore. Given the travel connections between these countries and the Philippines, there is a potential for the subvariant to enter the country through travelers.

Despite an increase in Covid-19 cases resulting from lax adherence to health protocols and the circulation of respiratory viruses like influenza, Dr. Solante notes that the hospitalization rate, particularly in the intensive care unit (ICU), remains relatively low.

In light of these developments, Dr. Solante advises individuals to focus on strengthening their immune systems as a means of avoiding severe forms of Covid-19. By adopting healthy lifestyle practices and taking necessary precautions, individuals can mitigate the risk of falling seriously ill.

It is crucial for the public to understand the urgency of the situation and the need for continued vigilance. While the emergence of the JN.1 subvariant adds a new layer of concern, the overarching message remains the same: Covid-19 is still present and can cause severe infections and long-term complications.

By staying informed, adhering to health protocols, and prioritizing personal health, individuals can contribute to the collective effort in preventing the spread of Covid-19. The battle against the virus continues, and it is only through a united front that we can overcome the challenges it presents.
