The Bureau of Immigration (BI) is optimistic about the recovery of passenger arrivals, with expectations of reaching or even surpassing pre-pandemic levels. This positive outlook comes as the number of travelers has significantly increased during the Christmas week.

According to Immigration Commissioner Norman Tangsingco, the immigration records indicate that the current passenger arrivals are already approaching the figures seen before the pandemic. Additionally, the volume of both arriving and departing passengers continues to rise.

During the first week of December, the BI recorded approximately 50,000 arrivals, which then increased to nearly 60,000 during the Christmas week. Specifically, on December 1, the number of arrivals in all international airports of the country reached 51,390. This figure further rose to 59,541 on December 22 and remained high at 58,993 on December 23.

Tangsingco revealed that over 85 percent of passengers arrive through the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). Furthermore, there has been a significant increase in departures as well, with 31,408 recorded on December 23, compared to the 25,759 on the first day of December.

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, December saw a staggering 1.7 million arrivals. It is worth noting that the arrivals for the entire year have already exceeded 80 percent higher than those in 2022.

In order to facilitate faster immigration clearance, Tangsingco encouraged arriving Filipinos to utilize the e-gates. These electronic gates provide a more efficient process for immigration checks, ensuring a smoother experience for travelers.

Additionally, Tangsingco reminded passengers to register via the etravel portal at etravel.gov.ph at least 72 hours before their arrival or departure. This registration process helps streamline the immigration procedures and ensures a more organized travel experience.

Tangsingco expressed his appreciation for the immigration officers who continue to serve during the holiday season. He commended their dedication and sacrifice, as they remain on duty and forgo spending time with their families to provide service to the traveling public.

“All hands are on deck for our immigration officers,” Tangsingco stated. “We commend our frontline personnel for their unwavering commitment during the holidays, ensuring that the traveling public receives the necessary assistance.”

The increasing number of passenger arrivals and departures is a positive sign for the recovery of the travel industry. The Bureau of Immigration’s confidence in reaching or surpassing pre-pandemic levels reflects the resilience and adaptability of the sector. As travelers continue to regain confidence and travel restrictions ease, the industry is poised for a gradual recovery, bringing with it economic benefits and renewed opportunities for both domestic and international travel.
