Senator Christopher “Bong” Go has called on Filipinos to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions against influenza-like illnesses (ILI) following a report from the Department of Health (DoH) stating that there have been over 190,000 documented cases in the country. As the chairman of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, Senator Go expressed deep concern and emphasized the importance of individual responsibility in daily activities.

“Health and caring for one another are of utmost importance, especially during the Christmas season. The gift of health is invaluable and should be treasured by every Filipino,” Senator Go said, highlighting the significance of prioritizing well-being.

Senator Go also stressed the need for collective efforts to combat the spread of various respiratory illnesses, including flu, influenza, and Covid-19. During a Senate hearing on December 18, he joined forces with the DoH in urging the public to continue wearing face masks as a preventive measure.

According to the DoH’s latest Disease Surveillance Report (DSR), there were 193,148 cases of ILI recorded from January 1 to November 25, representing a 50 percent increase compared to the same period last year when 128,386 cases were reported. The regions most affected by this rise in cases include Davao with 27,411 cases, Northern Mindanao with 24,357 cases, and Central Visayas with 23,470 cases.

Furthermore, regions such as the Zamboanga Peninsula, the National Capital Region, and the Cordillera Administrative Region have witnessed a significant surge in cases compared to the previous year. Despite the increase, the DoH report offers a glimmer of hope as it reveals a decrease in ILI-related deaths, with a case fatality rate of 0.14 percent this year, compared to 0.38 percent in 2022.

Senator Go commended the DoH for its enhanced disease surveillance and monitoring efforts. However, he cautioned against complacency and stressed the need to intensify the vaccination campaign, particularly in high-risk areas. Additionally, raising awareness and educating the public about flu symptoms and prevention should be prioritized.

The senator also called on local government units (LGUs) to play a more active role in managing this health issue. He urged LGUs to closely monitor their respective areas and ensure the proper implementation of health protocols. A synchronized approach is necessary to effectively combat the spread of influenza-like illnesses.

Influenza-like illnesses, characterized by symptoms such as fever, cough, and body aches, pose a significant challenge, particularly in densely populated areas. Therefore, it is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant, follow health guidelines, and seek medical attention if symptoms arise.

In conclusion, Senator Bong Go’s call for increased vigilance and collective efforts against influenza-like illnesses is a reminder to every Filipino to prioritize their health and the well-being of others. By staying informed, practicing preventive measures, and working together, the nation can successfully manage and curb the spread of these health threats.
