MANILA, Philippines: President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared February 9, 2024, as a special non-working day throughout the country in celebration of the Chinese New Year, according to an announcement made by Malacañang on Friday.
Presidential Communications Secretary Cheloy Garafil stated that the President, through Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, signed Proclamation 453 on Thursday, January 18, to officially declare the holiday.
“The declaration of February 9, 2024, as an additional special non-working day throughout the country will provide people with the full opportunity to celebrate the Chinese New Year and allow our fellow countrymen to enjoy a longer weekend,” stated President Marcos in his proclamation.
To ensure the implementation of the proclamation in the private sector, the President has directed the Department of Labor and Employment to issue an appropriate circular.
It is important to note that Proclamation 368, dated October 11, 2023, had already declared February 10, 2024, as a special non-working day throughout the country in observance of the Chinese New Year. However, since it falls on a Saturday, President Marcos decided to declare an additional non-working day to give everyone the chance to fully embrace the festivities.
The Chinese New Year is a significant festival that marks the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. It is celebrated with various customs and traditions that symbolize good fortune, prosperity, and unity among families.
In his Chinese New Year message last year, President Marcos called upon Filipinos to show compassion towards the less fortunate members of society.
“On this auspicious day, let us not only count our blessings but also inspire ourselves to extend deeper compassion to those who are less fortunate,” expressed President Marcos.
He further added, “I am delighted to embark on this new chapter with all of you, especially with our Filipino-Chinese communities, as we seek good fortune, joy, and harmony that will guide us in rewriting our shared history.”
The declaration of February 9, 2024, as a special non-working day for the Chinese New Year demonstrates the government’s recognition of the cultural diversity and traditions of the Filipino-Chinese community. It allows everyone to participate fully in the festivities and take advantage of an extended weekend to spend time with family and loved ones.
As the Chinese New Year approaches, Filipinos can look forward to a day of celebration, reflection, and unity. It is an opportunity to embrace the rich cultural heritage of the Filipino-Chinese community and strengthen the bonds of friendship and harmony among all citizens of the Philippines.
In conclusion, the declaration of February 9, 2024, as a special non-working day for the Chinese New Year in the Philippines reflects the government’s commitment to honoring and celebrating the cultural diversity of its people. It provides an occasion for Filipinos to come together, embrace traditions, and foster compassion towards one another. Let us welcome the Chinese New Year with open hearts and minds, and may it bring blessings, prosperity, and joy to all.
