PNP Reports Significant Decrease in Criminality Nationwide

During the flag-raising ceremony at Camp Crame, the headquarters of the Philippine National Police (PNP), PNP Chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. announced on Monday that the country has witnessed a substantial reduction in all forms of criminality. Acorda highlighted that the crime situation has greatly improved, with a notable 27.79 percent decrease in index crimes from January to February 2023, compared to the same period in 2024.

The PNP chief emphasized that the number of index crimes dropped from 3,573 incidents in 2023 to 2,580 incidents (a decrease of 993 incidents) in the corresponding period in 2024. Similarly, focus crimes saw a significant decline of 27.78 percent, with a decrease of 2,561 incidents from 3,546 incidents (a reduction of 985 incidents) compared to the same period in the previous year.

Acorda attributed these positive developments to the PNP’s relentless efforts in combating crimes related to illegal drugs. He revealed that the PNP successfully apprehended 4,823 drug personalities through 3,993 operations, resulting in the confiscation of illegal drugs worth approximately P359 million. The PNP’s operations against wanted persons also yielded fruitful outcomes, leading to the arrest of 6,069 suspects. Additionally, their efforts to curb the proliferation of loose firearms resulted in the apprehension of 709 individuals and the seizure of 3,384 firearms.

“I want to assure the public that our unwavering dedication to upholding the rule of law, safeguarding the security and welfare of our citizens, and promoting unity for the advancement of our cherished nation continues to be our top priority,” Acorda affirmed.

In the fight against terrorism, the PNP has made significant strides as well. They successfully arrested 21 terrorism suspects, while 269 others voluntarily surrendered. Furthermore, eight suspects were neutralized during police operations.

Addressing the growing concern of cybercrimes, Acorda informed the audience that the PNP has taken strong measures to combat this menace. They apprehended 21 cybercrime suspects in 12 entrapment operations conducted nationwide. These operations were carried out in compliance with search warrants to seize and examine computer data. Acorda also highlighted recent encounters with criminal groups, such as the Concepcion Criminal Group and the Ampoan Group in Samar province, which resulted in the neutralization of criminals and the unfortunate loss of three police officers.

“These police operations further solidify the PNP’s strong determination to effectively combat and dismantle groups involved in different criminal activities in the country,” Acorda emphasized.

From January 1 to February 2, 2024, the PNP launched 39 operations, leading to the neutralization of 18 criminal groups, the apprehension of 47 members, the surrender of nine individuals, the recovery of 16 firearms, and the filing of 30 cases in court. These actions demonstrate the PNP’s commitment to maintaining law and order while ensuring the safety and security of the Filipino people.
