It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Romulo “Romy” F. Mariñas, a beloved desk editor who had been a part of The Manila Times family. According to a relative who reached out to the Times on Saturday, Mariñas has left us at the age of 74.

Mariñas played a crucial role as a desk editor, meticulously editing stories in the News, Regions, and Opinion sections of the paper. His dedication to his craft was evident, and he also contributed thought-provoking pieces to the Times’ opinion and sports sections.

Notably, Mariñas had a weekly column on the Times sports page called “Free Kick,” where he shared his insights on football and other sports matters. His passion for sports shone through in his writing, captivating readers with his knowledge and perspective.

His last article for the Times was published online on December 28, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of impactful journalism.

Romulo “Romy” F. Mariñas was born on August 18, 1949, in Manila. He pursued his education at the Mapúa Institute of Technology, now known as Mapúa University, where he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering.

Prior to his career in journalism, Mariñas gained valuable experience working with the National Food Authority and in the private sector. In 1986, he embarked on his journalism journey, starting with publications such as We Forum, Malaya, and The Daily Tribune, where he served as a news editor.

During the historic EDSA People Power Revolution, Mariñas freelanced for a Japanese newspaper, showcasing his versatility and adaptability as a journalist.

To honor and pay tribute to Romulo “Romy” F. Mariñas, his body will lie in state at the St. Peter Chapels along Quezon Avenue in Quezon City. Starting on Monday, February 12, the public will have the opportunity to view his remains and bid their final farewells.

Romulo “Romy” F. Mariñas’ contributions to journalism and his unwavering dedication to his craft will be remembered and cherished. His impact on the industry, particularly in his role as a desk editor and sports columnist, has left an indelible mark on The Manila Times and the wider community.
