A “saddened and disappointed” Manny Pacquiao conceded on Monday that his Olympic boxing dream was over after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) rejected his special request to compete in this year’s Paris Games. The Philippine Olympic Committee announced the IOC’s decision on Sunday, which was met with respect by Pacquiao.
At 45 years old, Pacquiao, who retired from boxing in 2021 and had an unsuccessful presidential run, acknowledged and accepted the age-limit rules set by the IOC. Olympic boxers are required to be under the age of 40.
In a statement, Pacquiao, a legendary figure in the sport who won world titles in eight different weight categories over a career spanning more than a quarter of a century, expressed his understanding of the decision. He said, “While I am very saddened and disappointed, I understand and accept the age-limit rules.”
Last year, the Philippines requested a “universality place” from the IOC for Pacquiao, who has never competed in the Olympics. Universality places are typically awarded to athletes from smaller countries who struggle to qualify through the normal qualification process.
The decision by the IOC to deny Pacquiao’s participation in the Olympics has left Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham Tolentino disappointed. Tolentino stated that the decision would deprive the country of a “sure podium or first-ever gold” in Olympic boxing.
Despite the setback, Pacquiao expressed his continued support for Filipino athletes competing in the Olympics. He assured his fans that even in retirement, he remains committed to bringing pride and honor to his country inside the boxing ring in the near future.
On another note, Pacquiao’s aide confirmed on Monday that the boxing legend will be facing Thai kickboxer Buakaw Banchamek in an exhibition match on April 20 in Bangkok. The match will be fought under international boxing rules, providing an exciting opportunity for fans to see Pacquiao in action once again.
While Pacquiao’s Olympic aspirations may have been dashed, his determination to continue competing and entertaining his fans remains unwavering. The exhibition match against Buakaw showcases his ongoing passion for the sport and his desire to stay active in the boxing world.
As Pacquiao moves forward, his fans eagerly anticipate his upcoming exhibition match and look forward to witnessing the pride and honor he brings to the Philippines, both inside and outside of the Olympic ring.
