Senators Dismiss Senate Coup Rumors

Reports of an alleged move to replace Senate President Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri have been dismissed by senators, reaffirming their support for his leadership. The senators clarified that there is no plan for a leadership change in the Senate.

Senate President Pro Tempore Lorna Regina “Loren” Legarda expressed her full support for Zubiri, stating, “There is no leadership change as far as I know. We have our full support behind the leadership of SP Miguel Zubiri.” Legarda emphasized that she remains focused on their work and does not wish to engage in political discussions at this time.

Senate Majority Leader Emmanuel Joel Villanueva also affirmed his support for Zubiri, mentioning, “We’re all solidly behind our inspirational leader, our Senate President Migz Zubiri.” Villanueva confirmed that he was not aware of any resolution seeking to oust Zubiri as Senate chief.

Sen. Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito speculated that the rumors of a Senate coup could be a “divide and conquer strategy” originating from the House of Representatives due to the people’s initiative (PI). Ejercito further emphasized that the majority of senators have full trust and confidence in Zubiri’s leadership. He commended Zubiri for standing his ground and fighting for the institution and his principles.

Sen. Maria Lourdes Nancy Binay dismissed the reports as mere intrigue, stating, “Intriga lang ‘yan (It’s just intrigue).” She made it clear that there is no truth to the rumors of a leadership change in the Senate.

Similarly, Sen. Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada expressed his confusion regarding the Senate coup rumors, stating, “I don’t know where that [Senate coup rumors] came from.” Estrada emphasized that there is no need to change the Senate leadership.

Sen. Mary Grace Poe also denied the rumors and affirmed her trust in Zubiri’s leadership. She stated, “[That’s] Absolutely untrue. We trust the leadership of Senator Zubiri.”
