The Philippines’ Commitment to Peacekeeping Operations

The Philippines has expressed its intention to increase its engagement in peacekeeping operations of the United Nations (UN) and to send more Filipino women to help maintain international peace and security. This announcement was made during the 9,574th Security Council meeting on March 13, with the theme “Promoting Conflict Prevention – Empowering All Actors, Including Women and Youth.”

Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga, the Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources, stated that the country is prepared to expand its presence in UN peacekeeping operations. The Philippines has been actively involved in UN peacekeeping operations since 1963, and now it aims to further contribute by deploying more professional peacekeepers, particularly highly trained women peacekeepers who possess both expertise and compassion.

Yulo-Loyzaga emphasized that the Philippines’ commitment to inclusive intergenerational and lasting peace is the driving force behind this decision. As a partner, pathfinder, and peacemaker, the Philippines is ready to share its experiences with the Security Council and demonstrate a focused and effective approach to peace and security challenges.

Empowering Women in Peacebuilding

Yulo-Loyzaga highlighted the success story of the creation of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), which greatly involved women negotiators, researchers, educators, and community organizers. The Philippines hopes to engage with the Peacebuilding Commission to share its experiences in establishing the BARMM, as it continues its journey toward sustainable peace through conflict prevention, equity, and the preservation of human dignity.

The Philippines firmly adheres to the rules-based international order, where reason, rules, and compassion prevail. The country actively participates in regional and global partnerships, such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Yulo-Loyzaga believes that honest and strategic collaboration is essential in assisting conflict-affected countries, promoting the peaceful settlement of international disputes, and strengthening resilience in the face of security risks. Women play a central role in achieving these goals, as the art of peace-making begins at home and is nurtured by the hands of women.

Looking Towards the Future

The Philippines eagerly anticipates the “Summit of the Future” in September and the “2025 Review of the UN Peacebuilding Architecture.” These events present opportunities for the strengthening and updating of the UN toolbox for conflict prevention and the prevention of its recurrence.

The Philippines’ commitment to increasing its engagement in peacekeeping operations and sending more Filipino women as peacekeepers is a testament to its dedication to international peace and security. By sharing its experiences and collaborating with other nations, the Philippines aims to contribute to the promotion of conflict prevention, equity, and lasting peace.
