Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is currently revolutionizing the world, and experts and academics argue that it is crucial to establish legislation and laws to address the concerns and challenges it presents. This was the focus of the recent Artificial Intelligence Forum hosted by Kuwait University under the theme “Challenges, Development, and Innovation.” The forum brought together numerous government and private entities, highlighting the growing importance of AI in various sectors.
Dr. Sulaiman Al-Rafi, Acting Director of Kuwait University for Academic Support Services, emphasized the ethical considerations that arise from the widespread integration of AI into daily life. He stressed the urgency of conducting a comprehensive examination of these systems, with a focus on enhancing credibility, ensuring respect for individuals, applying principles of justice, and safeguarding confidentiality and privacy. Dr. Al-Rafi highlighted the importance of effective participation in decision-making, emphasizing the need to achieve these goals through respect for diversity, accessibility for all, and the elimination of disparities and discrimination.
Dr. Muhammad Al-Dhafiri, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Services Supporting Community Service and Libraries at Kuwait University, affirmed that AI has become an indispensable partner in community service. He emphasized its significant contributions to time and effort savings, as well as the reduction of tasks at academic and professional levels. The forum provided a platform to discuss challenges such as privacy, security, and bias, with the aim of formulating policies that address these issues.
Dr. Al-Dhafiri noted that while there may be temporary fears surrounding AI, these concerns can be alleviated through the implementation of laws that translate these challenges into actionable measures. By establishing clear guidelines and regulations, society can ensure that AI technology is used responsibly and ethically.
The Artificial Intelligence Forum also featured an awareness exhibition with over 30 participants from various sectors. The exhibition included lectures and introductory workshops, providing attendees with a deeper understanding of AI and its potential applications. One notable participant was the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), which showcased its modern application, the virtual broadcaster “avatar” technology. This innovative technology, launched in May, marked KUNA as the first news agency in the Gulf and Arab region to adopt this cutting-edge approach.
The forum served as a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration, bringing together experts, academics, and industry professionals to address the challenges and opportunities presented by AI. By fostering dialogue and encouraging the exchange of ideas, Kuwait University and its partners are taking proactive steps towards harnessing the potential of AI while mitigating its risks.
As AI continues to advance and become more integrated into our daily lives, it is crucial to have legislation and laws in place to guide its development and ensure its responsible use. The discussions and initiatives sparked by the Artificial Intelligence Forum in Kuwait are an important step in this direction, helping to shape the future of AI in a way that benefits society as a whole.
