The North Shuaiba Electric Power Plant in Al-Ahmadi, Kuwait, is set to receive services from General Electric (GE) under a new 5-year agreement. This collaboration falls under GE’s gas energy business unit and is part of an existing joint alliance involving the Malaysian company TNB Remaco and the Kuwaiti Dow Engineering Company, responsible for operating the power plant. The news was reported by MEED magazine and Al-Anba daily.
Under the terms of the agreement, GE Vernova, a division of General Electric, will provide spare parts, conduct repairs and field services, and implement predictive and advanced forecast-based maintenance for the three gas turbines at the 876 MW power plant. This move aims to ensure the smooth operation and reliability of the power plant.
One key aspect of the collaboration is the upgrade of the combustion technology utilized by the three gas turbines. Originally supplied to the station, GE will enhance the combustion system by transitioning to the most advanced low-NOx combustion technology. This upgrade not only improves station operations but also contributes to reducing emissions and enhancing the plant’s ability to shut down operations, thereby extending inspection periods.
Mohamed Nazri Bin Bazile, Chairman of the Board of Directors of TNB Remaco, expressed confidence in the collaboration with Vernova. He cited their technological expertise and established track record in gas turbine services as the basis of this confidence. The partnership with GE aims to ensure the Shuaiba North Power Plant operates with the utmost reliability.
Vernova’s significance as a long-term player in the Kuwaiti energy sector was also highlighted by the magazine. Its gas energy technologies currently support over a third of Kuwait’s electricity generation capacity. In addition, Vernova actively contributes to knowledge transfer at the local level through General Electric’s technology center in Kuwait.
This collaboration between General Electric, TNB Remaco, and Dow Engineering Company represents a significant step towards enhancing the efficiency and reliability of the North Shuaiba Electric Power Plant. With GE Vernova’s expertise and the upgrade of the combustion technology, the power plant is expected to operate more efficiently, reduce emissions, and extend inspection periods. This partnership further solidifies General Electric’s presence in the Kuwaiti energy sector and its commitment to supporting the country’s electricity generation capacity.
