Kuwait is taking significant steps towards addressing climate change and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, according to Undersecretary of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Oil, Sheikh Dr. Nimer Al-Fahad Al-Sabah. In a statement to KUNA, Sheikh Nimer Al-Sabah commended the UAE for hosting the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28), emphasizing the importance of shedding light on the challenges faced by the GCC and Arab countries due to climate change.
Recognizing the urgency of the issue, Kuwait has established a supreme national climate committee, led by the Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister of Oil, and the Minister of State for Economic and Investment Affairs. This committee aims to develop programs and plans to reduce emissions and enhance resilience against the impacts of climate change.
Sheikh Nimer Al-Sabah highlighted that Kuwait is actively working on low-carbon development strategies across various sectors, including oil, gas, energy, transportation, industry, land use, and agriculture. These strategies are designed to promote sustainable economic growth through the principles of the circular carbon economy.
As part of its commitment to reducing carbon emissions, Kuwait has submitted 14 projects to the Clean Development Mechanism program under the Kyoto Protocol. These projects are awaiting approval for participation in market mechanisms within Article VI of the Paris Climate Agreement, which aims to support emissions reduction and sustainable development.
Recently, Kuwait participated in a summit with a delegation led by the representative of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. The Kuwaiti pavilion at the summit showcased the country’s efforts in environmental conservation, development, climate action, and sustainability.
It is worth noting that Kuwait’s commitment to addressing climate change aligns with global efforts to combat the crisis. The country’s focus on low-carbon strategies and the circular carbon economy reflects its determination to transition to a sustainable and resilient future.
As Kuwait finalizes its 2050 low-carbon strategy, it is crucial to recognize the significance of such initiatives in the international context. Climate change affects nations worldwide, and each country must take responsibility for mitigating its impacts. By sharing its progress and plans, Kuwait sets an example for other nations in the region and beyond.
Furthermore, Kuwait’s efforts to manage the climate change file at the national level demonstrate its commitment to sustainable development. The formation of a supreme national climate committee underscores the government’s dedication to implementing effective policies and programs that address climate change holistically.
By focusing on various sectors, including oil, gas, energy, transportation, industry, land use, and agriculture, Kuwait aims to create a comprehensive approach to reducing emissions and enhancing resilience. This approach recognizes the interconnectedness of these sectors and the need for integrated strategies to achieve significant and lasting change.
Kuwait’s submission of projects to the Clean Development Mechanism program and its pursuit of participation in market mechanisms under the Paris Climate Agreement highlight its willingness to collaborate and engage in international efforts to combat climate change. The approval of these projects will further strengthen Kuwait’s position as a responsible global actor.
Overall, Kuwait’s commitment to a low-carbon strategy and its pursuit of carbon neutrality by 2060 demonstrate its determination to address climate change and its impacts. By prioritizing sustainable development and embracing the circular carbon economy, Kuwait sets a positive example for other nations and contributes to the global fight against climate change.
