The appointment of Sheikh Mishaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as the new Crown Prince of Kuwait has been met with great enthusiasm and support. The honorable Al-Sabah family, led by His Highness the Amir, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, has blessed this recommendation, solidifying Sheikh Mishaal’s position as a key figure in Kuwait’s political landscape.
Shortly after being sworn in as Amir in 2020, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah made the decision to appoint his half-brother, Sheikh Mishal Al-Sabah, as the Heir Apparent and Crown Prince of Kuwait. Prior to this appointment, Sheikh Mishal held the position of Minister and Deputy Commander of the Kuwait National Guard.
According to the Kuwait Constitution, the appointment of the Crown Prince requires the approval of Parliament. In a special session held the day after Sheikh Mishal was named Heir Apparent, all 59 attending members of the National Assembly ratified the nomination, pledging their support to the new Crown Prince.
Following his ratification, Sheikh Mishal entered the House to take his official oath of office before Parliament. In his oath, he vowed to respect the Constitution and the laws of the State, defend the rights, interests, and properties of the people, safeguard the independence and territorial integrity of the country, and remain loyal to the Amir.
In his address to Parliament and the nation, Sheikh Mishal emphasized the importance of popular participation in governance. He called for fostering a spirit of tolerance and unity, rejecting division, and prioritizing national interests guided by justice and a dignified living for all citizens. Sheikh Mishal’s vision for Kuwait is one of democratic stability and a bright future.
Sheikh Mishal Al-Sabah was born on September 27, 1940, as the seventh son of Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the 10th ruler of Kuwait. Growing up in the royal household, he was surrounded by family members and siblings who influenced and guided his early years. After completing his early education at the Al-Mubarakiya School in Kuwait City, he pursued higher studies in the United Kingdom and graduated from the renowned Hendon Police College.
Upon his return to Kuwait in 1960, Sheikh Mishal joined the Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior. From 1967 to 1980, he served as the head of the intelligence and state security service. During his tenure, he oversaw the transformation of the intelligence organization into the Kuwait State Security service and became its first director.
In 2004, Sheikh Mishal was named the Minister and Deputy Commander of the Kuwait National Guard (KNG) by protocol designation. As the deputy chief of the KNG, he held one of the most powerful internal security positions in the country. Over the next 16 years, Sheikh Mishal reformed and sculpted the 26,000-strong KNG into a secure and reliable force.
