Continuing its commitment to fostering scholarly engagement and public discourse on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) kicked off its Palestine Speaker Series with a thought-provoking public talk by historian and analyst, Tareq Baconi.
Baconi, the author of the influential book “Hamas Contained: The Rise and Pacification of Palestinian Resistance,” is not only a respected scholar but also the president of the board of Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network. He brings a wealth of experience, having previously worked with the International Crisis Group in Ramallah.
In a captivating conversation with Dr. Safwan Masri, the dean of GU-Q, Baconi delved into the pressing theme of “Israel’s War on Palestinians: Gaza as Epicenter.” Dean Masri expressed his excitement about hosting Baconi, praising his ability to explain complex issues convincingly, passionately, and with a grounded approach.
Drawing on his extensive academic research and prolific writing on this region of Palestine, Baconi explored the intricate history of the 140-square-mile Gaza Strip within the broader context of the Palestinian anti-colonial struggle. He also provided insights into the historical and political dynamics of Hamas in Gaza, offering a comprehensive perspective spanning several years to the present day.
Baconi emphasized the significance of understanding the Gaza Strip, challenging the perception that it is tangential or peripheral to the land of historic Palestine. He asserted that Gaza lies at the heart of Israeli settler colonialism and is crucial to comprehending the goals and impact of the Zionist project on Palestinians.
“The reality of Gaza is central to understanding what Palestine is, and I don’t see any form of emancipation or decolonization without addressing the injustice inflicted upon Gaza,” Baconi stated. He highlighted the long history of attempts to sever and pacify Gaza, emphasizing that it serves as the epicenter of Palestinian resistance.
The Palestine Speaker Series at GU-Q, initiated by Associate Professors Abdullah Al-Arian, Karine Walther, and Visiting Assistant Professor Nadya Sbaiti, is part of a larger project aimed at providing a platform for dialogue and analysis of the historical and contemporary issues facing Palestine. Throughout 2023, the series will feature contributions from renowned international scholars, experts, and practitioners, further advancing critical discourse on the Palestine-Israeli conflict.
By hosting events like the Palestine Speaker Series, GU-Q demonstrates its commitment to promoting understanding and fostering informed discussions on this complex and deeply rooted conflict. The university’s dedication to enriching scholarly engagement and public discourse contributes to the global efforts to achieve a just and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Georgetown University in Qatar’s Palestine Speaker Series serves as a vital platform for sharing insights, challenging prevailing narratives, and encouraging dialogue among students, scholars, and the wider community. Through events like these, GU-Q continues to play an important role in deepening our understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and working towards a more inclusive and equitable future for all involved.
