The Philippine government has embarked on a proactive endeavor to revamp and augment the capacity of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in a bid to bolster aircraft movements, with the ultimate goal of doubling its passenger capacity. NAIA, which currently operates with two runways, namely Runway 06/24 and Runway 13/31, presents certain operational challenges owing to its infrastructure limitations. Runway 06/24 spans an impressive 3,737 meters (12,260 feet) in length and 60 meters (200 feet) in width, while Runway 13/31 measures 2,258 meters (7,408 feet) in length and 45 meters (148 feet) in width.
Highlighting the significance of this proactive stance, the CAAP underscored, “This initiative aligns with the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) directive to elevate airplane movements at NAIA to 48 per hour, taking into account the existing infrastructure constraints.”
Presently, NAIA can accommodate approximately 40 to 42 slots for landings and takeoffs per hour. However, there exists a concerted effort to collaborate with international counterparts to meticulously assess the feasibility of achieving the targeted 48 movements per hour.
