The Department of Transportation (DoTr) announced on Friday that they have made significant progress in securing the right-of-way (ROWA) for the Metro Manila Subway Project. According to Transportation Undersecretary for Railways Jeremy Regino, the documentation requirements have been substantially completed, and negotiations are currently underway.
Regino emphasized the significance of acquiring the right-of-way for such a massive infrastructure project in Metro Manila. He highlighted that previous undertakings only involved small segments, streets, or properties. This time, however, the DoTr is simultaneously working on two major ROWAs – the Subway and the North-South Commuter Railway Project.
In a recent site inspection, the DoTr assessed the North Avenue Station for the initial drive of the subway’s tunnel boring machine No. 4. The project’s Contract Package 101, which includes four stations – Quirino Highway Station, Tandang Sora Station, North Avenue Station, and East Valenzuela Station – will require the use of six tunnel boring machines.
Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista estimated that the tunneling process up to Tandang Sora would be completed within the next 12 months. Once finished, the Metro Manila Subway will significantly reduce travel time from Quezon City to Ninoy Aquino International Airport, cutting it down from one hour and 10 minutes to just 35 minutes.
The impact of the subway extends beyond travel time reduction. It is expected to benefit approximately 519,000 passengers daily, providing a more efficient and convenient mode of transportation for residents and visitors alike. This project marks a significant milestone in Philippine history, as it is the first time such a large-scale right-of-way acquisition is being undertaken.
The Metro Manila Subway Project aligns with the government’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure and easing congestion in the capital region. By investing in modern and efficient transportation systems, the DoTr aims to enhance connectivity, promote economic growth, and improve the overall quality of life for Filipinos.
It is important to note that the progress made in securing the right-of-way for the Metro Manila Subway Project is a complex and challenging process. The DoTr and other relevant authorities are working diligently to navigate through legal requirements, negotiations, and potential obstacles to ensure the successful completion of this vital infrastructure project.
As the project moves forward, it is crucial to consider the local laws, customs, and regulations that may affect the acquisition of the right-of-way. The DoTr is committed to adhering to these laws and ensuring transparency in the process. By doing so, they aim to build trust and maintain the integrity of the project.
In conclusion, the Metro Manila Subway Project’s right-of-way acquisition has reached an important milestone, with progress currently at 55%. The DoTr’s efforts in securing the necessary documentation and negotiating the acquisition demonstrate their commitment to improving transportation infrastructure in the Philippines. Once completed, the Metro Manila Subway will not only reduce travel time but also provide a more efficient and convenient mode of transportation for hundreds of thousands of daily passengers.
