Government Collects Millions in Fines from Unauthorized Public Utility Vehicles

Learn more about the government’s efforts to ensure road safety by collecting millions in fines from unauthorized public utility vehicles. These vehicles pose risks as they operate without proper authorization and charge higher fares. The Department of Transportation (DoTr) has announced that it collected a significant amount of P20.8 million in penalties from colorum public utility vehicles (PUVs) in 2023. These unauthorized PUVs, which operate without proper authorization from the Land Transportation Office and Franchising Regulatory Board, pose safety risks as they have not undergone government-prescribed road-worthiness tests. In addition, they charge higher fares compared to legal PUVs. The DoTr, in collaboration with the Land Transportation Office and the Philippine Coast Guard, has intensified its operations to crack down on colorum PUVs and enforce road safety measures. Transport Secretary Jaime Bautista emphasized that these stiff penalties demonstrate the government’s commitment to prioritizing the safety of all commuters.
