The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has announced a reduction in its rates for the month of December. The rates have been lowered by P0.7961 per kiloWatt hour (kWh), resulting in an overall rate of P11.2584 per kWh for a typical household. This decrease in rates can be attributed to lower generation charges.
Meralco has stated that the generation charges for November decreased to P6.5332 per kWh from P7.1938 per kWh the previous month. This reduction was primarily due to lower charges from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) and the Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
The charges from the WESM decreased by P2.7624 per kWh in November, bringing the charges down to P4.4601 per kWh from P7.2225 per kWh in October. This significant decrease in charges from the WESM has contributed to the overall reduction in Meralco’s rates.
In addition to the WESM charges, Meralco also noted a decrease in charges from the IPPs. The charges from the IPPs went down by P0.4731 per kWh to P7.2330 in November from P7.7061 in October.
