World Media Summit: Building Consensus for Media Industry Challenges

GUANGZHOU: On Sunday, over 150 participants from media entities in 101 countries gathered in Guangzhou to review the role and responsibility of the media industry and build consensus in addressing common challenges. The 5th World Media Summit (WMS), officially opened by Xinhua News Agency president Fu Hua, aims to boost global confidence and promote media development.

Fu Hua, in his opening remarks, emphasized the importance of expanding channels of cooperation and promoting the sharing of best practices, capacity building, people-to-people exchanges, and the dissemination of relevant news that can contribute to peace and development worldwide. The theme of this year’s summit, “Boosting Global Confidence, Promoting Media Development,” reflects the need for collaborative efforts to address the evolving media landscape.

Recognizing the pressing issues faced by the media industry, speakers from leading media entities highlighted the need for the summit participants to focus on addressing challenges such as the proliferation of fake news and disinformation, the use of artificial intelligence in media, and the protection and safety of journalists. Furthermore, on Saturday, Fu Hua signed several media cooperation agreements with international agencies, including the renewal of news exchange cooperation with the Philippine News Agency. The 5th WMS, co-hosted by Xinhua and the provincial governments of Guangdong and Yunnan, will continue until December 8.
