During the flag-raising ceremony at Camp Crame, the headquarters of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. announced on Monday that the country has seen a remarkable reduction in all forms of criminality. This news comes as a welcome relief to the citizens of the Philippines, who have long been concerned about the safety and security of their communities.
According to Chief Gen. Acorda, there has been a significant improvement in the overall crime situation. Index crimes, which include offenses such as murder, robbery, and theft, have witnessed a 27.79 percent decrease. In January to February 2023, there were 3,573 reported index crimes, while in the same period in 2024, the number dropped to 2,580.
Furthermore, focus crimes, which are specific offenses targeted by law enforcement agencies, have also seen a considerable decline. In 2023, there were 3,546 focus crimes reported, but in the corresponding period this year, the number decreased to 2,561.
The fight against illegal drugs has been a major priority for the PNP. Chief Gen. Acorda revealed that through 3,993 operations, they were able to arrest 4,823 drug personalities. These operations also resulted in the confiscation of illegal drugs worth approximately P359 million. This achievement demonstrates the PNP’s commitment to combating the drug menace and protecting the Filipino people from its harmful effects.
In addition to their efforts against drugs, the PNP has also been successful in apprehending wanted individuals. A total of 6,069 suspects have been arrested through their law enforcement operations. The PNP’s dedication to removing dangerous individuals from society has undoubtedly contributed to the improved safety and security of the nation.
The PNP’s campaign against loose firearms has also yielded positive results. So far, they have apprehended 709 individuals involved in the possession and distribution of illegal firearms. Additionally, they have confiscated 3,384 firearms, further reducing the potential for violence and criminal activity.
Chief Gen. Acorda emphasized that the PNP’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the security and welfare of the citizens remains unwavering. He assured the public that their safety is of utmost importance and that the PNP will continue to work tirelessly to maintain peace and order in the country.
In the fight against terrorism, the PNP has made significant strides. Police operations have led to the arrest of 21 terrorism suspects, while 269 others have voluntarily surrendered. Additionally, eight individuals who posed a threat to national security have been neutralized.
