MANILA, Philippines: The Philippine National Police (PNP) has continued its efforts to cleanse the organization, resulting in the dismissal of 131 policemen from January 1 to February 14, 2024, according to PNP spokesperson, Col. Jean Fajardo.
Of the dismissed personnel, 62 were involved in Absence Without Leave (AWOL) cases, while the remaining individuals were separated from the service due to grave offenses, including robbery, illegal drugs, obstruction of justice, and conduct unbecoming a police officer, Fajardo announced during a press briefing on Thursday evening.
As part of its commitment to upholding the rule of law, the PNP will be providing legal assistance to seven policemen who recently surrendered to the PNP Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group. These officers were ordered for arrest by a Rizal court on two counts of murder.
The murder charges stem from an incident that occurred in 2010, where two suspected New People’s Army rebels were killed in Rodriguez, Rizal. The police claim that the deaths were the result of a legitimate operation conducted by the PNP Special Action Force.
Recognizing the importance of supporting its personnel facing service-related cases in court, Fajardo emphasized that the PNP will be offering legal assistance to these individuals. “Since this is related to the performance of their duties, the PNP will provide them legal assistance,” Fajardo stated.
Additionally, Fajardo highlighted that the seven policemen, including three captains, have expressed their readiness to face the murder charges brought against them. This demonstrates their commitment to accountability and due process.
The ongoing “cleansing” of the Philippine National Police signifies the organization’s unwavering dedication to maintaining integrity and professionalism within its ranks. By holding officers accountable for their actions, the PNP aims to build public trust and enhance its ability to serve and protect the Filipino people.
These recent dismissals and legal proceedings serve as a reminder that no one is above the law, regardless of their position or affiliation. Upholding the principles of justice and fairness is crucial to ensuring a safe and just society.
As the PNP continues its efforts to rid the organization of corruption and misconduct, it sends a strong message that unethical behavior will not be tolerated. The dismissal of these 131 policemen serves as a warning to others who may consider engaging in similar misconduct, reinforcing the PNP’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and accountability.
Through these actions, the Philippine National Police is working towards creating a police force that is trusted and respected by the public, capable of effectively maintaining law and order, and dedicated to serving and protecting the Filipino people.
