The Philippine National Police (PNP) has released photos of two individuals believed to be responsible for the bombing in Marawi City on December 3, which resulted in four deaths and numerous injuries. The PNP Public Affairs Chief, Col. Jean Fajardo, identified the suspects as Kadapi Mimbesa, also known as Engineer, and Arsani Membisa, also known as Katab or Papitos.
According to Fajardo, witnesses were able to identify the two bombers from the photos shown to them by the police investigators, including their clothing. The PNP reviewed the CCTV footage from outside the MSU (Mindanao State University) and spotted the suspects at around 6:27 a.m. They were seen entering the gymnasium at approximately 7 a.m. All of this was captured in the enhanced CCTV footage.
After leaving the gymnasium, one of the suspects was observed pulling out his cellphone, potentially to make a call, which may have triggered the explosion. Fajardo added that immediately after the blast, the suspects quickly left the MSU premises. In the same footage, Mimbesa was seen carrying a bag that is believed to have contained the bomb.
Membisa, one of the suspects, has an existing warrant of arrest for murder issued on May 10, 2022. Additionally, he is facing a murder case in Marawi City. The investigators noted that the 60mm mortar fragments recovered from the blast site were similar to those used by the terrorist group in previous attacks.
This incident highlights the ongoing threat of terrorism in the Philippines, particularly in the conflict-ridden region of Marawi. The Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group, to which the suspects are believed to belong, has been responsible for numerous acts of violence in the area.
The identification and release of the suspects’ photos by the PNP is a significant step towards bringing them to justice. It allows the public to assist in their capture and serves as a warning to other potential perpetrators.
It is crucial for the authorities to continue their efforts to dismantle terrorist networks and prevent future attacks. This involves not only apprehending the individuals involved but also addressing the root causes of radicalization and extremism.
Furthermore, international cooperation in combating terrorism is essential. Sharing intelligence, resources, and expertise among nations can help mitigate the global threat posed by terrorist organizations.
The Philippine government, along with its international partners, must work together to enhance security measures, strengthen border control, and improve intelligence gathering to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Local communities also play a vital role in countering terrorism. Building trust between law enforcement agencies and the public is crucial in gathering information and preventing radicalization.
The identification of the suspected bombers in the Marawi City attack is a significant development in the ongoing fight against terrorism. It demonstrates the commitment of the Philippine National Police to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.
By working together, both domestically and internationally, we can strive towards a world free from the fear and devastation caused by acts of terrorism.
