(UPDATE) The Philippine National Police (PNP) has made significant progress in the investigation of the bombing that occurred inside the Mindanao State University (MSU) in Marawi City on December 3, resulting in the tragic deaths of four individuals and leaving 54 others injured. The PNP Public Affairs Chief, Col. Jean Fajardo, has identified two suspects involved in the incident as Kadapi Mimbesa, also known as Engineer, and Arsani Mimbesa, also known as Katab/Papitos. Both individuals are believed to be operatives of the Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group.

According to Col. Fajardo, the identification of the suspects was made possible through witness testimonies and the examination of rogue pictures shown to them by the police investigators. The witnesses were able to recognize the suspects based on their attire and other distinguishing features.

Furthermore, the PNP reviewed CCTV footage from outside the MSU campus, which revealed the presence of the two suspects. The footage showed the suspects entering the gymnasium at around 7 a.m., shortly after being seen in the vicinity at 6:27 a.m. The enhanced footage confirmed their presence at the scene.

Col. Fajardo also highlighted a crucial moment captured on the CCTV footage. As the suspects exited the gymnasium, one of them pulled out a cell phone, giving the impression of making a call. Shortly after, the explosion occurred.

“Before the explosion, the footage shows the suspects leaving the MSU. One of them appears to be making a call using his cell phone, which might have triggered the explosion,” explained Col. Fajardo. “Immediately after the explosion, the suspects hastily left the MSU premises.”

Notably, the footage also revealed that Mimbesa was carrying a bag, suspected to have concealed the explosive device used in the attack. It is worth mentioning that Mimbesa is already the subject of a standing warrant of arrest for murder, issued on May 10, 2022. He is also facing a separate murder case in Marawi City and has been previously linked to other bombing incidents.

In a significant breakthrough, investigators were able to match the bomb signatures from the 60mm mortar fragments recovered at the blast site to those used by the terrorist group in previous bombing attacks in Mindanao.

The identification of the suspects and the matching of bomb signatures provide critical leads in the ongoing investigation. The PNP, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, is committed to bringing these individuals to justice and ensuring the safety and security of the public.

This development underscores the dedication and professionalism of the PNP in swiftly responding to acts of terrorism. The authorities’ relentless pursuit of justice serves as a strong deterrent to those who aim to disrupt peace and stability in the region.

As the investigation progresses, the cooperation of the public is vital. Any information that could aid in the resolution of this case should be reported to the authorities immediately. Together, we can contribute to a safer and more secure environment for everyone.

It is important to note that this incident is not representative of the peaceful and diverse community that MSU and Marawi City embody. The resilience and unity of the people will prevail, as they continue to rebuild and move forward.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of the victims affected by this senseless act of violence. May they find strength and solace during this difficult time.
