The Manila City government, under the Department of Tourism, Culture, and the Arts (DTCAM), is excited to announce the commencement of The Manila Film Festival (TMFF) as part of the Araw ng Maynila celebration on June 24. This annual event aims to showcase the talents of Filipino filmmakers and provide a platform for their creative expressions.

Open to all bona fide students aged 18 and above, from private and state colleges and universities nationwide, the TMFF is a fantastic opportunity for aspiring filmmakers to make their mark in the industry. Charlie Dungo, the head of DTCAM, encourages young talents to take part in this prestigious festival.

To participate, interested individuals must submit their entries by the deadline on February 29, 2024. For detailed information, including submission requirements and guidelines, please visit the official festival website at www.themanilafilmfestival.com.

One of the highlights of this year’s festival is the “Gawad Maynila” film grant, which will be awarded to promising Filipino independent filmmakers. This grant serves as a recognition of the filmmakers’ dedication and contribution to the local film industry.

The theme for this year’s TMFF is “City of Infinite Possibilities and A Thousand Tales.” While story concepts set in the actual city of Manila are preferred, the organizers also recognize the Manila that exists in the dreams and aspirations of Filipinos everywhere, both within the country and abroad. This broad theme allows filmmakers to explore various perspectives and narratives that reflect the essence of Manila.

Entries should have a running time of no less than 15 minutes and no more than 20 minutes, including the opening and closing credits. It is essential for participants to prepare a comprehensive story paper that outlines the basic premise of their film, along with a short document indicating the current stage of their project (story/script development or pre-production/planning). Additionally, a one-page synopsis or storyline, a resume of the proponents, sample production work (preferably as director), two recent photos of the proponents, and related materials based on the identified production phase should be included.

Filmmakers have the opportunity to submit a maximum of three entries, but only one entry per participant may be considered as a finalist. It is crucial to note that works already in the principal photography or post-production phase before February 29 will be disqualified.

The TMFF not only celebrates the art of filmmaking but also provides a platform for emerging talents to gain recognition and exposure. By participating in this festival, filmmakers have the chance to showcase their creativity, storytelling abilities, and unique perspectives on the City of Manila.

As the festival continues to grow, it aims to foster a vibrant film community that nurtures and supports the next generation of Filipino filmmakers. The Manila City government, through DTCAM, remains committed to promoting the arts and culture scene in the city, ensuring that Manila remains a hub for creative expression and storytelling.

So, if you have a passion for filmmaking and want to be part of an exciting festival that celebrates the City of Infinite Possibilities, submit your entries to The Manila Film Festival and let your talent shine on the big screen.
