The Increasing Demand for Electricity in the Face of Extreme Heat
The demand for electricity to cool down houses due to the extreme heat has been on the rise nationwide, according to an official from the Department of Energy (DOE). Energy Assistant Secretary Mario Marasigan, in an interview with The Manila Times, stated that the increasing temperatures prevailing in the country are a significant factor contributing to the continuously growing demand for electricity.
Marasigan revealed that on April 24, the country surpassed its peak demand for 2024. Luzon, the largest island group in the Philippines, recorded a peak demand of 14,016 megawatts (MW), which was 99 MW higher than the projected 13,917 MW. In the Visayas, the peak demand reached 2,891 MW, surpassing the original projection of 2,586 MW. Mindanao, the second-largest island group, experienced a peak demand of 2,584 MW, exceeding the initial projection of 2,534 MW.
Highlighting the previous year’s data, Marasigan noted that Luzon fell short of the projected peak demand by 575 MW, while the Visayas and Mindanao were 233 MW and 72 MW below their respective projections.
The Adequacy of Electricity Supply
Despite the high demand for electricity, Marasigan assured the public that the supply across all grids, from Luzon to Mindanao, was sufficient. This statement provides some relief to consumers who may have concerns about potential power shortages.
Recommendations for Energy Conservation
In light of the increasing demand for electricity, Marasigan advised the public to adopt energy-saving measures to help manage the situation effectively. The Department of Energy recommends setting air conditioning systems at a comfortable temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, which is considered an optimal balance between cooling and energy efficiency.
Additionally, the DOE discourages the unnecessary usage of energy-intensive appliances during peak hours, which typically occur from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. By minimizing energy consumption during these periods, individuals can contribute to the stability of the power grid and help prevent potential power outages.
It is crucial for consumers to be mindful of their energy usage and make conscious efforts to conserve electricity, especially during times of high demand. By following these recommendations, individuals can play a role in ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply for all.
