(UPDATE) The Commission on Appointments (CA) has given its approval for the interim appointments of Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. as Agriculture secretary and Teodoro Herbosa as Health secretary. These appointments come with significant responsibilities and the expectation of addressing pressing issues in their respective departments.
Laurel, the newly appointed Agriculture secretary, has been entrusted with the task of weeding out corrupt individuals within the Department of Agriculture, cracking down on food smugglers, and increasing food production. In line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s instructions, Laurel aims to modernize agriculture and strengthen food production, which are crucial pillars for building a progressive Bagong Pilipinas (new Philippines).
To achieve these objectives, Laurel emphasizes the importance of collaboration with both national and international law enforcement agencies. He intends to seek the assistance of biologists, data scientists, and the academe in tackling challenges such as the Avian flu, African swine fever, and red tide. By leveraging expertise from various fields, Laurel aims to develop effective strategies and solutions to combat these issues.
Meanwhile, the newly appointed Health secretary, Teodoro Herbosa, has proposed optional face mask usage in enclosed places for individuals at high risk, such as the elderly and those prone to illnesses. Recognizing that December is a season of respiratory illnesses, Herbosa advises individuals who are sick to refrain from attending parties to prevent further spread of infections.
During the confirmation hearing, Herbosa clarified that there have been no recorded outbreaks of the so-called walking pneumonia in the Philippines. While this form of pneumonia may not cause severe symptoms, it is essential to exercise caution and follow preventive measures, including social distancing, wearing face masks, and practicing proper cough etiquette.
Herbosa also highlighted that other countries in Europe have reported an increase in respiratory illnesses among children. Although the situation in the Philippines remains stable, it is crucial to remain vigilant and adhere to the practices learned during the Covid-19 pandemic to prevent the spread of any respiratory illness.
As Herbosa awaits final confirmation from the CA plenary, he remains committed to safeguarding public health and ensuring the well-being of the Filipino population. His appointment brings with it a wealth of experience and expertise that will contribute to the effective management of the Department of Health.
These interim appointments mark a significant step towards addressing key issues in the agriculture and health sectors. With Laurel and Herbosa at the helm, there is hope for increased food production, modernization of agriculture, and the implementation of measures to protect public health. The CA’s approval demonstrates confidence in their capabilities to lead their respective departments and make a positive impact on the lives of the Filipino people.
