MANILA, Philippines: As the Christmas season approaches and the number of Covid-19 cases continues to rise, Manila Mayor Maria Sheila “Honey” Lacuna has issued a strong advisory to residents, urging them to remain vigilant and wear masks in places where crowds gather.
“This appeal is especially important for those with comorbidities or in the senior age group, who are more susceptible to infection. While it may be difficult to avoid attending gatherings during the holidays, it is crucial to be extra cautious and wear a face mask,” Lacuna emphasized on Wednesday.
Lacuna’s call to wear properly-fitted masks is in line with the guidance provided by the Department of Health (DoH) to ensure that citizens adhere to basic health standards.
Recent data from the DoH revealed that from December 5 to 11, 2023, the country recorded approximately 1,821 new cases of Covid-19.
This week, the average number of new cases per day reached 260, marking a 36 percent increase compared to the cases reported from November 28 to December 4.
The rise in cases serves as a reminder that the pandemic is far from over and that precautions must be taken to protect oneself and others.
With the holiday season fast approaching, gatherings and celebrations are inevitable. However, it is essential to prioritize the health and safety of everyone involved.
Wearing face masks is a simple yet effective measure that can significantly reduce the risk of transmission. Masks act as a barrier, preventing respiratory droplets from spreading and potentially infecting others.
When attending gatherings, it is important to choose masks that fit properly and cover both the nose and mouth. Ill-fitting masks may not provide adequate protection, leaving individuals vulnerable to the virus.
Additionally, it is crucial to practice good hand hygiene by frequently washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or using hand sanitizers with at least 60 percent alcohol content.
Social distancing should also be observed. Maintaining a distance of at least one meter from others can help minimize the risk of close contact transmission.
Furthermore, individuals with comorbidities or those in the senior age group should exercise extra caution. These individuals are considered high-risk and are more susceptible to severe illness if infected with Covid-19.
While it may be challenging to avoid gatherings altogether, it is advisable to assess the risks involved and make informed decisions. Virtual celebrations or small, intimate gatherings with immediate family members may be safer alternatives.
Local laws and regulations regarding gatherings should also be taken into account. Different countries and regions may have specific guidelines in place to limit the number of attendees and ensure social distancing.
By following these precautions and being responsible during the holiday season, we can help protect ourselves, our loved ones, and the wider community from the spread of Covid-19.
Let us all do our part in keeping each other safe and healthy. Together, we can make this holiday season joyful and memorable, while also prioritizing public health.
