The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) has announced its readiness to send 35 Filipino doctors to Gaza, as part of its efforts to alleviate the suffering of the people in the region. PRC Chairman Richard Gordon expressed his intention to send doctors during a recent television interview, where he highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety of the medical personnel.
Gordon revealed that he had already made inquiries about the possibility of sending Filipino doctors to Gaza during a recent visit to Hanoi. He emphasized that the PRC has 35 doctors who are ready for deployment and expressed his intention to engage with government officials to facilitate the process.
However, Gordon clarified that he prefers the doctors to work in stand-alone camps rather than Palestinian hospitals with underground facilities. This approach would enable them to be easily identified as part of the Red Cross and prioritize their safety. The doctors’ primary objective is to provide medical assistance to vulnerable groups such as children, women, the elderly, and others in need.
Gordon’s call for immediate international response came ten days after Hamas attacked Israel in October. He proposed the idea of sending ships, whether military or commercial, to Gaza to serve as hospitals. Drawing from the successful experience of setting up full-fledged emergency hospital tents during the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda, in partnership with the Red Cross societies of Finland and Canada, Gordon expressed confidence in the ability to replicate such efforts in Gaza. The establishment of stand-alone camps would ensure the safety of the Filipino doctors while delivering vital medical aid.
The PRC’s initiative has received recognition from the Egyptian Red Crescent, as evidenced by a letter dated November 21, 2023, from the Chief Executive Officer, Ramy El Nazer. The letter commends Gordon for his efforts in organizing the deployment of Filipino doctors and nurses to Gaza, acknowledging the significance of their contribution to the region.
The deployment of Filipino doctors to Gaza not only demonstrates the Philippines’ commitment to humanitarian efforts but also showcases the expertise and dedication of its medical professionals. As the PRC prepares for this mission, it reflects the country’s solidarity with the international community in addressing the urgent healthcare needs of the people affected by the conflict in Gaza.
The PRC’s decision to prioritize the safety of its doctors by establishing stand-alone camps underscores the organization’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of its personnel. By working under the Red Cross banner, the doctors will be easily recognizable and protected, allowing them to focus on their primary mission of providing much-needed medical assistance to those most in need.
As the situation in Gaza continues to unfold, the efforts of organizations like the PRC play a crucial role in delivering essential healthcare services to affected communities. The deployment of Filipino doctors and nurses is a testament to the power of international collaboration and solidarity in times of crisis.
Through their expertise and compassion, these medical professionals will bring hope and healing to the people of Gaza, reaffirming the global community’s commitment to supporting those in need and promoting peace.
