The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) and the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP) have joined forces to enhance the well-being of urban poor communities. Through this partnership, they aim to provide essential services, including first aid training, food and nutrition programs, health services, and livelihood assistance.
Recognizing the vulnerability of urban poor communities to various risks and hazards due to their limited access to basic services, the PRC and PCUP are working together to ensure that these communities are well-prepared for crises and disasters. This collaboration is a crucial step towards enhancing their resilience.
Richard Gordon, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the PRC, emphasizes the importance of partnering with institutions and agencies to support communities in times of need. He states, “Urban poor communities are more exposed to high risks and hazards than others due to their lack of access to basic services. The partnership between the PRC and the PCUP is one excellent way to be prepared.”
To solidify their commitment, PRC Secretary-General Dr. Gwen Pang and PCUP Chairman and CEO Undersecretary Elpidio Jordan Jr. signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) at the Sequoia Hotel in Quezon City. This MoA signifies the joint efforts of the two organizations to train urban poor communities and establish sustainability and resilience during emergencies.
The initiatives included in the agreement encompass a range of essential skills and services. Emergency First Aid Training and Basic Psychological First Aid Training will equip community members with the knowledge and skills to respond effectively during emergencies. Bloodletting activities will contribute to the availability of blood supply, ensuring that communities have access to this life-saving resource when needed.
The partnership also recognizes the importance of livelihood training and the establishment of community gardens. By providing urban poor communities with the necessary skills and resources, they can develop sustainable livelihoods and become more self-reliant. Additionally, financial literacy skills will be imparted to ensure the long-term viability of their livelihoods.
Dr. Gwen Pang emphasizes the significance of including urban poor communities in solution and development plans. Empowering these communities by placing safety and health in their hands is a fundamental aspect of the partnership’s approach. By equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills, they can actively contribute to their own well-being and resilience.
The MoA signing event was attended by key representatives from both organizations. PRC Safety Services Manager Jaylord Abrigado and PRC Welfare Services Acting Manager JLo Morigo were present, along with PCUP Executive Assistant Evita Pearl Jamon and PCUP Chief Administrative Officer Atty. Ralph Anthony Cortez. Their presence signifies the commitment of both the PRC and PCUP to work collaboratively towards the betterment of urban poor communities.
In conclusion, the partnership between the Philippine Red Cross and the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor is a significant step towards empowering urban poor communities. By providing essential services, training, and livelihood assistance, these communities will be better equipped to face emergencies and improve their overall well-being. This collaboration exemplifies the importance of collective efforts in building resilient communities and ensuring that no one is left behind.
