Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, has called on the Department of Health (DoH) to prepare for the reported increase in flu-like cases in the country. Expressing concern over the rising respiratory illnesses, particularly among children, in various regions since mid-October, Go emphasized the need for the government to be proactive in handling the situation.
In a chance interview on December 8 in Pamplona, Cagayan, Senator Go expressed his support for a possible inquiry into the government’s preparedness in dealing with the increasing influenza cases. He stated, “I am willing to call for a hearing on this to learn about the preparedness of the Department of Health regarding the rising cases of influenza and how to address this problem because we don’t want this to worsen and affect our countrymen.”
Senator Go highlighted the bills he filed to enhance the country’s health programs and its capability to handle infectious diseases. One of these bills is Senate Bill (SB) 196, which aims to establish the Virology Science and Technology Institute of the Philippines. This institute would enable the country to manufacture its own vaccines, ensuring a reliable and timely supply. Additionally, Senator Go filed SB 195, which seeks to create the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to monitor infectious diseases and respond effectively.
Emphasizing the importance of being proactive and prepared, Senator Go drew lessons from the challenges the health system faced during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic. By strengthening the country’s health infrastructure and capabilities, he aims to prevent future outbreaks and protect the health of Filipinos.
Earlier, Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa clarified that there is “no outbreak” of the so-called walking pneumonia, a mild form of flu, in the country. However, Senator Go urged Filipinos to remain vigilant and adhere to health protocols, including the voluntary use of masks. He emphasized the role of Malasakit Centers and super health centers in providing accessible healthcare and early disease detection, especially in light of these recent health concerns.
As the country faces the possibility of an increase in flu-like cases, Senator Bong Go’s call for the Department of Health to be prepared and proactive is crucial. By advocating for the establishment of the Virology Science and Technology Institute and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Senator Go aims to enhance the country’s ability to handle infectious diseases effectively. It is essential for Filipinos to remain vigilant and follow health protocols to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses. With the support of accessible healthcare facilities like Malasakit Centers, the government can ensure the early detection and timely treatment of diseases, safeguarding the health and well-being of the Filipino people.
