MANILA, Philippines: Fireworks-related injuries (FWRIs) in 2023 have witnessed a significant increase of 98%, according to the final bulletin released by the Department of Health (DoH). From December 21, 2023, to January 6, 2024, a total of 609 FWRIs were recorded, compared to 307 during the same period in 2022, as reported by the DoH’s Online National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (ONEISS).
Out of the total cases, 601 were caused by explosions, one was due to Watusi ingestion, and seven were a result of stray bullets, as stated by the DoH. Tragically, two deaths were confirmed, both resulting from blasting incidents in the Ilocos region.
The first fatality occurred on January 2, when a 38-year-old man lost his life in an explosion after lighting a cigarette while drinking alcohol near a storage area for firecrackers. The second death was reported on January 5, involving a 44-year-old man who had previously been injured in the blast.
The DoH suggests that the increase in cases this year may be attributed to the lifting of Covid-19 pandemic restrictions. “We see this Yuletide season as one without any pandemic restrictions. It could be because of this renewed freedom to gather and celebrate that more people chose to use fireworks. However, this remains a hypothesis that requires further study,” stated the DoH.
The surge in fireworks-related injuries raises concerns about the safety measures in place during the festive season. With the dramatic increase in FWRIs, it is essential to educate the public about the potential dangers and promote responsible behavior when handling fireworks.
Fireworks have long been a traditional part of celebrations around the world, including the Philippines. However, the improper use of fireworks can lead to severe injuries, property damage, and even loss of life. It is crucial for individuals to understand the risks associated with fireworks and take necessary precautions to ensure everyone’s safety.
Local laws and regulations play a vital role in ensuring the safe use of fireworks. In the Philippines, the Republic Act No. 7183, also known as the “Firecracker Regulation Act of 1992,” provides guidelines for the manufacture, sale, distribution, and use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices. These regulations aim to minimize the risks associated with fireworks and protect the public from potential harm.
Furthermore, local government units (LGUs) in the Philippines often implement additional measures to promote safety during the holiday season. These measures may include designated areas for fireworks displays, public awareness campaigns, and stricter enforcement of firecracker regulations.
While the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions may have contributed to the increase in fireworks usage, it is essential to balance the joy of celebration with the need for safety. Individuals should exercise caution when handling fireworks and follow the recommended safety guidelines:
- Only purchase fireworks from authorized and licensed sellers.
- Read and follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
- Designate a responsible adult to supervise the use of fireworks.
- Keep a safe distance from buildings, vehicles, and other flammable materials.
- Never light fireworks indoors or near dry vegetation.
- Dispose of used fireworks properly and safely.
By adhering to these safety measures, individuals can enjoy the festive spirit while minimizing the risk of injuries and accidents. It is crucial for communities, families, and individuals to prioritize safety and make responsible choices during the holiday season.
Fireworks can undoubtedly enhance celebrations, but it is essential to remember that safety should always be the top priority. Let us all work together to ensure a joyful and accident-free festive season.
