In an effort to provide further support to senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs), the Philippines is set to implement an additional discount on the purchase of prime commodities starting in March. House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez recently met with officials from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to discuss the possibility of increasing the existing discount for these individuals.
Under the current system, senior citizens and PWDs are entitled to a weekly discount of P65 on groceries for a purchase of P1,500. However, with the rising cost of living, this amount is no longer deemed sufficient. In response to this concern, the DTI, together with the Departments of Agriculture and Energy, will issue a circular to implement an increased discount of P125 per week.
The expanded discount will be applicable to a range of basic goods and prime commodities, including rice, corn, bread, meat, fish, chicken, eggs, cooking oil, sugar, vegetables, fruits, onions, garlic, as well as fresh and processed milk. Additionally, processed meat, sardines, and corned beef (excluding premium brands), along with basic construction supplies such as cement, hollow blocks, electrical supplies, and light bulbs, will also be included.
While the process of consultation with stakeholders is ongoing, the necessary interagency circular will be issued to ensure the timely implementation of the increased discounts. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to creating a more inclusive and caring nation.
House Speaker Romualdez expressed his delight at the impending implementation of these increased discounts, commending the DTI and other agencies for their dedication to advancing this initiative. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that senior citizens and PWDs receive the support they need, particularly in light of the challenges posed by the rising cost of living.
It is worth noting that the Philippines has taken significant steps towards recognizing and supporting the elderly population. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed Republic Act 11982, also known as the expanded “Centenarians Law,” which grants a P10,000 cash gift to elderly citizens upon reaching the age of 80 and every five years thereafter until the age of 95. This legislation aims to celebrate and honor the contributions of the elderly to society.
The implementation of increased discounts for senior citizens and PWDs on prime commodities is a positive step towards addressing the needs of these vulnerable groups.
