In the latest development of the ongoing South China Sea dispute, China has urged the Philippines to refrain from allowing itself to be manipulated by the United States. The warning came after a recent encounter between Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) ships and Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea.

The incident occurred when Chinese vessels attempted to block the entry of boats bringing supplies to troops stationed on the grounded BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal. During the confrontation, four Filipino crew members were injured and their ship was damaged by water cannons from the Chinese vessels.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Mao Ning, addressed the issue during a regular press conference on Wednesday, March 6, 2024. Mao Ning emphasized the need for the Philippines to avoid being manipulated by the US, stating, “Lessons from history tell us that a pawn will only end up being abandoned.”

Regarding the joint declaration issued by the Asean-Australia Special Summit, Mao Ning stated that China had noted relevant reports but had not yet seen the full text of the declaration. However, she reiterated China’s clear and consistent position on the South China Sea issue.

“We will stay committed to properly handling disputes through dialogue and consultation with the countries concerned,” Mao Ning affirmed. “We would like to work with Asean countries to fully and effectively implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), advance the consultation on a code of conduct in the South China Sea, and jointly safeguard peace and stability in the region.”

Earlier in the day, Australia and Asean released a joint declaration, calling on all countries to avoid unilateral actions that could jeopardize peace, security, and stability in the South China Sea. This declaration follows a series of incidents involving Chinese and Philippine ships, with the Philippines accusing China of deliberately stirring up trouble in the region.

The South China Sea dispute has been a longstanding issue, with multiple countries claiming sovereignty over various islands and territories. Tensions have escalated in recent years, particularly between China and neighboring countries such as the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia.

China’s assertiveness in the region has raised concerns among its neighbors and the international community. The US has been supporting its allies in the region, including the Philippines, in their territorial claims and has conducted freedom of navigation operations to challenge China’s excessive maritime claims.

While the Philippines has sought to maintain a balanced approach in its relations with both China and the US, it has faced challenges in navigating this delicate situation. The country relies on both countries for economic and security interests.

However, the Philippines has also sought to strengthen its ties with other countries in the region, such as Japan and Australia, as a means of diversifying its alliances and reducing its dependence on any single power.

As the South China Sea dispute continues to unfold, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize peaceful dialogue and diplomatic solutions. The international community, including Asean and other regional powers, should play a constructive role in facilitating negotiations and promoting stability in the region.

Ultimately, a peaceful resolution to the South China Sea dispute is in the best interest of all parties involved. It is essential for the Philippines and China, as well as other claimant states, to engage in meaningful dialogue and work towards a mutually acceptable solution that respects international law and upholds the principles of freedom of navigation and peaceful coexistence.
