Teodoro stated that the DND’s mandate, as enshrined in the Constitution, is to protect the integrity of the national territory and ensure the sovereignty of the State. This commitment applies both externally and internally, underscoring the department’s dedication to upholding the nation’s unity.
Armed Forces Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. echoed Teodoro’s sentiments, urging soldiers to maintain professionalism and loyalty. He introduced the AFP’s new battle cry, “One AFP, One Philippines,” emphasizing the importance of remaining loyal to the Constitution and the duly constituted authorities. Brawner emphasized that a strong Armed Forces of the Philippines contributes to a strong country, highlighting the ongoing pursuit of modernization and capability development. He called on soldiers to continuously enhance their competencies and prepare themselves for their roles.
The Department of Justice (DoJ) firmly opposed the calls for the secession of Mindanao, emphasizing that secession contradicts the principles of the country’s democratic society, as stated in Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution. As the principal law agency of the executive branch, the DoJ remains committed to safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and upholding the sanctity of the highest law of the land. The department called on Filipinos to reject secessionist ideologies and work together for a strong, united, and undivided Bagong Pilipinas.
The DoJ’s statement was a response to former president Rodrigo Duterte’s recent declaration that political forces in Davao would regroup to initiate a movement for a separate and independent Mindanao. Duterte expressed the belief that Mindanao would be better off as an independent entity, highlighting the perceived lack of progress in the Philippines under various administrations. Davao del Norte 1st District Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez, who will lead the new movement advocating for the separation of the South from the republic, drew parallels to Singapore’s independence from Malaysia in the 1960s.
National Security Adviser Eduardo Año emphasized that the government would respond resolutely to any attempt to secede. Año stated that the national government would utilize its authority and forces to quell and prevent any efforts to dismember the republic. He further warned that secessionist movements could undermine the progress achieved through the government’s peace deal with former separatist groups. Decades of violence and conflict in Mindanao have hindered development, discouraged investments, and left many communities in poverty.
The strength of the nation lies in unity, and it is imperative to reject divisive ideologies that threaten the country’s integrity. The government, through the DND, DoJ, and other relevant agencies, remains committed to upholding the sovereignty of the Philippines and ensuring the unity of the nation.
