MANILA, Philippines: Vice President Sara Duterte’s recent rejection of the planned resumption of peace talks between the Philippine government and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) has sparked controversy and debate. In a video posted on her Facebook page, Duterte expressed her misgivings about the peace negotiation, describing it as “an agreement with the devil.”

Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito weighed in on the issue, suggesting that it would be better for Vice President Duterte to directly communicate her concerns to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to dispel any speculation that they are politically drifting apart. Ejercito emphasized that the country is facing numerous challenges and problems that require immediate attention.

Ejercito’s call for a ceasefire on political attacks from different factions echoes the sentiment that it is too early for politicking. He believes that unity is essential in order to overcome the challenges that the nation is currently facing.

Vice President Duterte’s objection to the peace negotiation stems from her belief that the government’s agreement with the NDFP in Oslo, Norway, was ill-advised. She appeals to President Marcos to review these proclamations and agreements, particularly the decision to grant amnesty to communist rebels.

The joint communique signed by the Philippine government and the NDFP in Oslo aimed to address the root causes of the armed conflict and put an end to the armed struggle. This significant step towards peace was witnessed by the Royal Norwegian government Special Envoy Kristina Lie Revheim, who commended both parties for their commitment to finding a lasting solution to the longstanding conflict.

Norwegian Ambassador to the Philippines, Christian Halaas Lyster, expressed his country’s continued support for the peace process, stating that Norway remains a committed partner to the parties involved. He also expressed hope that the Philippines can serve as a beacon of hope for other countries facing similar conflicts.

EU Ambassador to Manila, Luc Véron, also hailed the resumption of talks as a promising step towards a peaceful resolution. He applauded the Norwegian government for its instrumental role in achieving this accord and emphasized the importance of diplomacy during such times.

The rejection of the peace talks by Vice President Duterte has sparked a range of reactions from the public. Some support her stance, believing that the government should not negotiate with groups they consider to be a threat to national security. Others argue that dialogue and negotiation are crucial for achieving lasting peace and addressing the root causes of the conflict.

It is important to note that the peace talks between the government and the NDFP are complex and multifaceted. They involve discussions on issues such as social and economic reforms, political and constitutional reforms, and the cessation of hostilities. The resumption of these talks after six years is seen by many as a significant step towards finding a peaceful resolution.

As the debate continues, it is crucial for the government and all stakeholders to consider the interests of the Filipino people and work towards a comprehensive and sustainable peace agreement. Only through open dialogue, understanding, and compromise can the nation move forward and overcome the challenges it currently faces.
