In 1946, Manuel Roxas, Elpidio Quirino, and Jose Avelino broke away from the Nacionalista Party to form the Liberal Party (LP) in the Philippines. As the party celebrates its 78th year, LP President and Albay 1st District Rep. Edcel Lagman emphasizes the importance of perpetuating the legacies of democratic liberalism, social justice, and good governance that the party has championed since its inception.

Despite facing challenges and a dwindling membership, Lagman dismisses the idea of a party hiatus. Instead, he sees this as an opportune moment to reinforce the values and principles that the LP stands for. He acknowledges that while the party may be small in numbers, its members possess unquestionable quality and excellence.

The LP takes pride in its history of upholding democratic principles and advocating for a just and equitable society. Throughout its existence, the party has opposed oppression and despotism, consistently fighting for the rights and welfare of the Filipino people.

Recognizing that there is much work to be done, Lagman vows that the LP will continue to engage in meaningful dialogue, forge strategic alliances, and mobilize its members to effect positive change in the lives of all Filipinos. The party’s commitment to democratic ideals remains unwavering.

Former senator and LP spokesperson, Leila de Lima, highlights the historical context in which the party emerged. LP’s founders fought for democracy in the aftermath of the Second World War and during the dark period of Martial Law. The party has stood firm against corruption and has implemented programs to ensure that no Filipino is left behind.

De Lima emphasizes that the LP’s struggle is not confined to its past but is deeply ingrained in its resilience. As the country’s history is being rewritten and institutions are being challenged, the LP continues to fight for democracy and progress.

She calls on Filipinos to remember that the Liberal Party has been a stalwart force throughout history, adapting and evolving to confront each challenge head-on. The party’s commitment to its core values of democracy, justice, and progress remains steadfast.

With eight members in the House of Representatives and a legacy that includes four past presidents – Manuel Roxas, Elpidio Quirino, Diosdado Macapagal, and Benigno Simeon Aquino 3rd – the LP continues to play a significant role in Philippine politics.

As the Liberal Party of the Philippines celebrates 78 years, it serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of democratic liberalism, social justice, and good governance. The party’s commitment to championing these values, turning challenges into opportunities for a better future, remains unwavering. Together, let us continue to support the Liberal Party in its pursuit of a just and equitable society for all Filipinos.
