PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has assured the public that the government will “exhaust all remedies available” to secure the release of the 17 Filipino seafarers who have been taken hostage. In a video message uploaded on the Presidential Communications Office’s official Facebook page late Thursday, the President stated that the government is taking immediate action, including negotiations with the group holding them captive.
The President emphasized the urgency of the situation, acknowledging that the safety and well-being of their fellow Filipinos is of utmost importance. He stated, “There are things that need to be attended to immediately. One of them is our compatriots, our fellow Filipinos, who were taken hostage. We are exerting all efforts to bring them home.”
To address the situation, the government is forming a delegation that will engage in negotiations with the Houthi rebels. President Marcos emphasized the need to ensure the security of their countrymen and expressed confidence in the delegation’s ability to facilitate the safe return of the seafarers. He said, “That’s why we are forming a delegation to talk to those who are holding them so they could go home. I’m sure you would understand that we put that first because we have to ensure the security of our countrymen.”
In order to prioritize the hostage situation, President Marcos canceled his trip to attend the Conference of Parties for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). In a heartfelt apology to the Filipino community in the UAE, he explained the reasons behind the cancellation and expressed his disappointment at not being able to meet with them. He said, “It’s really sad because I was looking forward to being with you.” The President also assured them that if given another opportunity, he would make it a point to meet with them and make up for the missed engagement.
The Houthi rebels, known for their alliance with Iran, have been involved in missile and drone attacks against Israel in solidarity with Hamas militants fighting in the Gaza Strip. The recent incident involving the seizure of a British-owned and Japanese-operated cargo ship in the southern Red Sea by the Houthis has been described by Israel as an “Iranian act of terrorism” with implications for international maritime security.
President Marcos’ commitment to securing the release of the Filipino seafarers demonstrates the government’s dedication to the welfare and safety of its citizens. By canceling his trip and forming a delegation for negotiations, he has shown his willingness to prioritize the immediate needs of the hostages. The President’s message of apology to the Filipino community in the UAE further highlights his empathy and concern for the well-being of overseas Filipinos.
As the government takes necessary actions to address the hostage situation, it is crucial to support efforts that ensure the safe return of the seafarers. The international community must remain vigilant in condemning acts of terrorism and upholding maritime security. The Philippines, along with its allies, will continue to work towards a resolution that ensures the safety and well-being of its citizens.
