SEN. Christopher “Bong” Go has called on the government to take immediate action and provide more interventions and aid for the poor in order to mitigate the impact of inflation on the country’s most vulnerable populations. Recent statistics have shown a rise in the inflation rate, which has disproportionately affected low-income families.
“In these challenging times, it is imperative that we do not neglect the needs of our poorest countrymen. The recent inflation report is a stark reminder that more needs to be done to cushion the impact on those who are most vulnerable,” emphasized Go.
The Philippine Statistics Authority’s (PSA) report on Tuesday revealed that the inflation rate accelerated to 3.4 percent in February, up from 2.8 percent in January. While the rate falls within the forecast range of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, it remains a cause for concern among economic analysts and policymakers.
The PSA has attributed the price surges mainly to increases in the cost of food and non-alcoholic beverages, transportation, and housing utilities. These rising costs have put a significant financial strain on Filipino families, making it even more crucial for government agencies to act swiftly and efficiently.
“In light of these alarming figures, it is imperative for our government agencies to act swiftly and efficiently. The Filipino people rely on government support to ease their burdens,” said Go, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
In response to the growing financial strain on Filipino families, Go has recently co-authored and co-sponsored Senate Bill (SB) 2534. This bill aims to raise the daily minimum wage by P100 across the country. Although the measure was approved on third and final reading in the Senate on February 19, it is still pending in the lower house.
“A significant wage increase is necessary to help our workers cope with the rising cost of living. It’s about ensuring that our people can provide for their families without undue hardship,” Go explained. The bill also seeks to address wage disparities nationwide and comply with the constitutional mandate to enhance the living standards of the average Filipino, with a particular focus on the working class.
In addition to economic measures, Go highlighted the role of Malasakit Centers in easing the financial strain on families. These centers have been established to streamline access to medical and financial assistance from various government agencies. During economic downturns, Malasakit Centers have provided relief to Filipinos, ensuring that they receive the necessary support during challenging times.
As the impact of inflation continues to affect the most vulnerable populations in the Philippines, it is crucial for the government to implement timely interventions and support. By addressing the rising costs of essential goods and services, providing substantial wage increases, and ensuring access to financial and medical assistance, the government can help alleviate the burden on Filipino families. It is through these concerted efforts that no Filipino will be left behind in the face of economic challenges.
