(UPDATE) MANILA, Philippines: In a recent development, the House of Representatives’ Committee on Legislative Franchises has ordered the release of Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI) hosts, Jeffrey Celiz and Lorraine Badoy-Partosa, from detention on humanitarian grounds and in the spirit of the Yuletide season.
The committee had previously cited the two in contempt and detained them at the House. However, Paranaque City 2nd District Rep. Gus Tambunting, the committee’s chairman, clarified that the release order is unrelated to the petition filed by the spouses of Celiz and Badoy-Partosa before the Supreme Court.
Chairman Tambunting emphasized that the decision to release Celiz and Badoy-Partosa was purely based on humanitarian grounds. With tomorrow being the last day of session, the committee did not want Mr. Celiz and Ms. Badoy to spend their Christmas and New Year in detention. This compassionate gesture reflects the committee’s commitment to upholding the principles of fairness and empathy.
Tambunting further stated that the committee’s initial order to detain Celiz and Badoy-Partosa was made in accordance with the Constitution and the existing Rules of the House of Representatives. However, during the committee hearing on Celiz’s request for release, it was noted that he had complied with the demand to disclose his source. Celiz had admitted that the information he received regarding Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez’s travel expenses was incorrect.
The committee took into consideration Celiz’s letter of apology, wherein he expressed remorse for the dissemination of false information provided by his source. Chairman Tambunting acknowledged Celiz’s admission of spreading fake news and his sincere appeal to be released in order to attend to his ailing mother.
Following the committee’s decision, Badoy expressed her gratitude, stating that this is a “win for press freedom” in the country. The release of Celiz and Badoy-Partosa marks a significant victory for the Filipino people, highlighting the importance of upholding the rights of journalists and ensuring a free and independent press.
It is worth noting that Badoy and Celiz resorted to a hunger strike last week as a form of protest against their detention. Their determination to fight for their freedom serves as a testament to the unwavering spirit of those who believe in the fundamental principles of democracy and the right to freedom of expression.
As we approach the holiday season, this decision to release Celiz and Badoy-Partosa demonstrates the House of Representatives’ recognition of the importance of compassion and understanding. It serves as a reminder that even in the midst of legal proceedings, humanity should prevail, allowing individuals to spend cherished moments with their loved ones during this festive time of year.
This recent development is not only significant for Celiz and Badoy-Partosa but also for the broader conversation surrounding press freedom and the protection of journalists’ rights. It serves as a reminder that the freedom of the press is a cornerstone of democracy, enabling the public to stay informed and hold those in power accountable.
As we reflect on this decision, let us remember the importance of a free press and the role it plays in shaping our society. By upholding the principles of fairness, compassion, and freedom of expression, we can continue to foster an environment that encourages open dialogue and the pursuit of truth.
