MALABON City Mayor Jeannie Sandoval has been recognized by the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) for her administration’s “excellent” urban housing initiatives that have significantly improved the quality of life for Malabueños.

Sandoval attributes the success of these initiatives to the hard work and dedication of the city officials and employees who have played a crucial role in implementing the administration’s programs, including various housing projects.

The DHSUD presented the prestigious award to the city government during the agency’s 5th anniversary celebration held last week. This recognition is a profound acknowledgment of the collective achievements and highlights the synergy between the city and the national government.

In an interview with The Manila Times on Monday, Mayor Sandoval expressed her gratitude, stating, “This accolade resonates with the understanding that true progress is a collective achievement, born out of the seamless collaboration between the national and local entities working hand in hand. It is a celebration of the shared vision, dedication, and concerted efforts that have propelled Malabon toward becoming a model for urban planning and design nationwide.”

One of the city’s notable initiatives is the “Disaster Resilient, Climate Change Adaptive, and Sustainable Socialized Housing Project” for St. Gregory Homes. This project aims to provide safer and better homes for the residents. St. Gregory Homes, located in Barangay Panghulo, consists of 23 five-story buildings with 60 units each.

In addition to this, Mayor Sandoval mentioned that 420 families, including those living near waterways and danger zones, victims of fire and calamities, and those affected by the rehabilitation of pumping stations, were successfully relocated to better and safer homes within the city. The mayor highlighted that approximately 90 percent of these relocated families have shown improvement in their quality of life, thanks to the livelihood trainings they participated in.

Alexander “Alex” Rosete, the City Administrator and concurrent City Housing and Urban Development Department head, emphasized that the DHSUD recognition not only commends Malabon’s commitment to creating a sustainable city but also praises its initiative, the Disaster Resilient, Climate Change Adaptive, and Sustainable Socialized Housing Project for St. Gregory Homes. This project has been hailed as a manifestation of Malabon’s vision for a better and more resilient community.

Looking ahead, top city officials expect Malabon to play a vital role in the “Pambansang Pabahay Para sa Pilipino Program (4PH)” of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. This program aims to eradicate informal settlements by 2028, and Malabon’s experience and expertise in urban housing initiatives position the city to contribute significantly to this national goal.

In conclusion, Mayor Jeannie Sandoval’s administration in Malabon City has received well-deserved recognition for its excellent urban housing initiatives. Through collaborative efforts between the national and local government, the city has become a model for urban planning and design nationwide. The commitment to providing safer and better homes for residents, as exemplified by the Disaster Resilient, Climate Change Adaptive, and Sustainable Socialized Housing Project for St. Gregory Homes, showcases Malabon’s vision for a more resilient community. With its track record of success, Malabon is poised to play a crucial role in the national program to eradicate informal settlements and create a better future for all Filipinos.
